The opportunity
As an R&D Chemist within our Materials Research Team, you will have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge materials for augmented reality (AR) applications. This role combines the excitement of contributing to innovative technologies shaping the future of immersive experiences with the chance to gain valuable hands-on experience in optical materials development.
This role requires someone to be onsite in Austin, TX. Relocation assistance may be available
What you’ll do
- Under the supervision of senior chemists, synthesize, formulate, and scale-up new materials for AR applications, such as high/low refractive index materials, nano-imprint resist, functional optical coatings, etc
- With the mentorship from senior chemists, design and execute experiments to optimize material performance, including optical, mechanical, thermal, properties, stability, compatibility with device manufacturing processes, etc
- Accurately document all experimental procedures, results, and observations in lab notebooks or digital platforms to ensure traceability and compliance, and report experimental results, insights, and recommendations to senior chemists or project leaders in a timely and organized manner to facilitate decision-making and project progression
- Conduct quality control (QC) analyses on experimental results to ensure reliability and consistency and monitor batch-to-batch variations
- Source and purchase chemicals and lab supplies required for research and development activities and maintain accurate records of chemical inventories, lab supplies, and their usage, ensuring compliance with organizational policies
- Prepare and update safety documentation, including chemical safety data sheets (SDS), hazard assessments, and lab safety protocols
The experience you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related field. 1-2 years of working experience in a chemistry lab is preferable but not required
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to carefully and precisely record experimental results and observations.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments methodically and consistently, adhering to high standards of accuracy and quality.
- Excellent organizational skills for maintaining thorough documentation of laboratory work and inventories
- Effective communication skills for timely reporting of findings and insights to senior chemists and team members
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to follow safety protocols rigorously
It’s exciting if you also have
- Familiarity with semiconductor/photonic industry and cleanroom operations
- Proficiency in material characterization tools, such as spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FTIR, etc), microscopy (optical, SEM), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC), ellipsometry, etc.
- Experience in scaling up materials from lab to production, knowledge of statistical analysis for QC and process optimization
- Knowledge/experience of UV curable materials
