The opportunity
The Product Development and Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.
As a Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer within our Mechanical Engineering team, you will be responsible for defining architectural concepts for future products and subsystems. You will lead efforts across cross functional teams such as Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Calibration, and Perception to translate optical and perception requirements into physical hardware design proposals. You will examine trade-offs and drive solutions that simultaneously optimize size, weight, power, and performance among additional competing requirements for compact imaging and display systems.
This role is based at our HQ in Plantation, FL or our Sunnyvale, CA office and will require you to come into our office regularly. Relocation assistance offered.
What you’ll do
- Be the subject matter expert (SME) within the PD organization on optics and optomechanical matters
- Design optomechanical components and subsystems within the Mechanical Engineering team
- Collaborate with the Optics, Display, Sensors, NPI, and other OptoMechanical engineers in the company to optimize the designs, assembly, and manufacturing of head worn devices
- Develop a deep understanding of the optical and sensor KPIs and how they relate to the display product user experience
- Translating the requirements into mechanical systems that simultaneously satisfy all KPIs in the end-to-end system
- Provide and negotiate guidance on tolerancing, material choices, testing methodologies, and fabrication
The experience you bring
- 10+ years experience in design and development of optical products, preferably consumer products
- Master's Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering field
- Capable of developing concepts for fixtures, calibration equipment, or production components using 3D CAD (ie CREO) which meet the product requirements
- Knowledge of color science, colorimetry, image quality metrics (camera and display), and algorithms for digital image processing
- Experience with commercial optical design software tools (e.g. Zemax)
- Working knowledge of statistical processing software such as JMP
- Opto-Mechanical design (Solidworks, Fusion 360 etc.) and 3D printing experience
It's exciting if you also have
- Knowledge of optical and mechanical test and metrology systems preferred
- Experience in AR, VR optics & imaging
- Knowledge of Windchill, FMEA preferred
- Knowledge of precision machining, fast tool servo (FTS), high-speed milling and multi-axis diamond machining preferred
