With the introduction of Lush’s new social media policy, PR is more important than ever to: reach new and current Lush customers; drive brand awareness; establish Lush as a leader within industry; and create brand affinity and loyalty.  The Head of PR for North America will be responsible for ensuring the communication strategy is consistent and reflects our strategic vision.  Building the business is their constant priority, and they will consistently maintain our competitive advantage, maintaining the best public facing reputation and selling the vision, building the strategy around it.

With accountability for overall business success, results are visible and reported globally. They are expected to work with conviction to produce the results they desire and take responsibility for the results they produce.

A main priority will be to build Lush’s PR team in the North American region – being able to identify what’s needed to build the brand reputation, where new hires are necessary, in what roles and what locations.

Working closely alongside the Brand Director and reporting directly to the North American Leadership Group and the Global Group, the Head of PR for North America will be responsible for building and running a thriving, exciting and successful PR department in North America (spanning the US and Canada) – leading the media relations to increase brand awareness, drive sales and thought leadership in the market.  They are the main point of contact for our founders and directors to provide transparency on deliverables, decisions, projects and spend on PR in NA.

The successful candidate will bring with them a great little black book of media contacts across top-tier national press, particularly in relation to Cosmetics and Retail, and be someone who excels at proactively pitching stories and managing crisis communications.

You will undertake the following Responsibilities:

  • To lead, manage and deliver an external communications strategy for NA - including media relations, PR, awards, corporate publications and events.
  • Recruit a strong and dynamic PR team for Lush North America – identify what roles are needed and where, to effectively raise the brand awareness in both Canada and the US.  Taking into consideration the English, French and Spanish speaking communities.
  • Identify whether we need any agency support or expertise, either in Canada or the US, hire if needed and manage accordingly – either on a retainer or project basis, to get the best out of them. 
  • Onboard, coach and lead the PR team – establish and imbed the Lush culture and develop a high performing, dynamic team
  • Motivate the team to contribute in their best way
  • Use the global direction to set the PR objectives for the NA market and be accountable for delivering them.
  • Influence and Implement PR strategies that enhance Lush’s reputation in NA; reach new audiences; drive sales; and establish the core values of the business.
  • Build collaborative relationships with different departments across the business to align communications strategy with business objectives.
  • Support all spokespeople within the business (media training, interview support)
  • Take an out-of-the-traditional-PR-box approach, be disruptive in the industry and bring a pioneering new approach to communication at Lush. 
  • Develop strong relationships with the Global Lush Group, to understand the global direction and be able to implement locally to have maximum impact.
  • Regularly meet with PR departments across the Group to share ideas and plan effective globally relevant PR strategies
  • Lead the NA PR team in the development of PR stories, pitches, media and influencer activations - plus the writing of press releases and opinion pieces.
  • Evaluate opportunities for brand partnerships and media sponsorships.
  • Set clear and measurable objectives for PR initiatives and campaigns.
  • Report results to North American Leadership and Group team
  • Manage brand reputation through proactive and reactive strategies and messaging to assist the Ethics Director in guiding the brand through crises and issues.

Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of proven PR leadership experience with at least 5 years’ experience building and leading a diverse PR team/business function

  • Motivating leader who can effectively engage, lead and coach a talented team.
  • Exceptional and proven proactive and reactive media relations skills
  • Experienced and proficient with media relations and story-telling, with a strong contact book across top tier publications - in the consumer and beauty industry, but also in other fields such as business, sustainability, thought leadership, tech or finance.
  • Outstanding ability to cultivate successful relationships and networks, both internally and externally.
  • Experience and genuine interest in uncovering unique and innovative communication approaches to build brand reputation and media coverage.
  • Proven Media crisis and issues management experience.
  • Highly adaptable multi-tasker, detail-oriented self-starter who can excel in a fast-paced environment while still managing multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional writer and verbal communication skills, with experience dealing with senior decision makers.

Preferred:

  • PR agency experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Advertising and/or Marketing or equivalent work experience
  • Consumer product or consumer PR agency experience preferred as well as experience in the beauty industry.
