Position Description:
LISC Kansas City (LISC KC) is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as an Intern. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work closely with our staff to address critical issues related to racial equity, housing development, and community wealth building in Kansas City. This will be a valuable experience for any student pursuing a career in Nonprofit Management, Social Services, Finance, Political Science or Business Administration.
Responsibilities:
- Work under the supervision of LISC KC staff to assist in the preparation of a comprehensive presentation detailing historical and contemporary patterns of discrimination in small business lending and funding.
- Conduct research to identify and analyze the impact of these discriminatory practices on racial minorities, housing development, and community wealth building in Kansas City.
- Collaborate with team members to compile relevant data and case studies to support the presentation.
- Create a housing advocacy and education document that effectively communicates Census data, housing rental rates, and pay disparities across different job types.
- Utilize data visualization techniques to present findings in a clear and compelling manner.
- Provide administrative support as needed.
Required Background and Skills
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
- Self-motivated and able to work diligently with limited supervision
- Demonstrated interest in housing, economic and community development
- Experience with academic and professional research, including ability to locate, analyze, and prepare brief summaries drawn from historical and contemporary research materials, including books, academic literature, and financial/industry reports
- Strong quantitative skills, including experience downloading and analyzing data drawn from U.S. Census of Population and Housing
- Experience building charts and graphs in Microsoft Excel
- Strong writing and PowerPoint presentation skills
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with housing and/or small business finance and lending
- Experience building thematic maps using ArcMap/ArcGIS
- Strong graphic design and visual presentation skills
This internship program will run from May to July/August and it is a paid opportunity ($20.00/hour) with flexible scheduling options available. The successful candidate will gain valuable hands-on experience in community development advocacy and contribute to meaningful projects that make a positive impact in Kansas City.
