So, what’s the role?

The Data Team’s mission is to develop an industry leading, modern data stack that enables Kin to expand our competitive advantage. The team is accountable for building out the central nervous system accountable for improving customer experience and navigating commercial outcomes. Our charter includes Data Engineering, Data Science, and Business Analytics. It is our responsibility to build world class data infrastructure, tooling, governance, analytics, insights, and models. Our vision for Kin is a data-empowered culture where everyone at Kin is equipped with the tools, knowledge, and resources to leverage data to drive business growth at scale.

Kin’s Product team is the fulcrum that takes our vision of what home insurance should be and makes it real. Our product leaders are responsible for the commercial success of our products. They straddle technology and all other business areas to ensure the right work is getting done.

We are currently looking for a Product Director to join our team.  As a Product Director, you will drive and help articulate the overall vision, strategy, and roadmap of Data at Kin. You will do this by deeply understanding our Data opportunities, and collaborating very closely with our SVP of Data Science. You will need to have a strong history of collaborating across teams and organizations, including a heavy focus on business partnership, and data architecture.

Our ideal candidate has low ego, acts like an owner, and can run through walls to turn ambiguous opportunities into concrete plans while taking into account our overall commercial strategy.

You will be accountable for execution of our data strategy, and for directly managing a small team of one or more other product management folks, as well as collaborating with colleagues at all levels within the organization. You will drive key business results for our senior most stakeholders.

A day in the life could include: 

  • Leading a high-quality team of technical folks and engineers that work with you to transform the data vision into reality
  • Optimizing our end to end data supply chain to understand gaps, opportunities for improvement, and how best to impact outcomes by leveraging data
  • Driving the use of data as a first class product with clear metrics, and strategies to leverage data ubiquitously in the business
  • Partnering with architects, product owners, data professionals, and software and data engineers to drive the implementation of new data products
  • Collaborating with internal teams to find areas of opportunities for automation and machine learning
  • Collaboratively driving the vision, strategy and roadmap for Data, and lead the team to execute 
  • Supporting the growth and development of team members

Specifically, be responsible for:

  • Partnering with cross-functional stakeholders and partners, including Product, Data Science, Business Intelligence, Engineering, business domains, and functional operation teams, to align on Data team dependencies, roadmap, priorities, engagement model, and key processes
  • Being a thought leader, identifying high impact project opportunities and process changes, and improving productivity of the overall Data Team
  • Prioritizing products, features, and enhancements including short, mid, and long-term roadmaps
  • Scaling data ingestion to be easier/faster; creating a deeper understanding of data quality, availability and downstream implications of gaps; and driving use of APIs, Analytics and data science across all domains at Kin
  • Creating a governance model so there is clear accountability and planning around data usage
  • Collaborating with the various data & domain teams to create data-driven decisions and recommendations for priorities
  • Presenting recommendations to senior leadership as well as all other levels of stakeholders in the organization
  • Gathering user research and inputs across business functions
  • Outlining problems and proposed solutions, supported with data
  • Writing user themes, epics, and/or stories that provide all of the details needed by our development teams to develop critical features
  • Planning ahead to ensure team has appropriate amount of work ready and delivery timelines are known to stakeholders
  • Coordinating and leading regular team and stakeholder meetings
  • Defining metrics that demonstrate product success, while monitoring and responding to outcomes

I’ve got the skills… but do I have the necessary ones?

  • 12+ years total work experience
  • 8+ years product management experience, preferably led a data product function.
  • 5+ years experience managing people and teams
  • Strong understanding of the data supply chain from ingestion to consumption.
  • Experience with a modern data stack and cloud data technologies.
  • Extensive experience in working collaboratively to lead horizontal or platform functions within a high growth venture backed organization
  • Extensive experience working with Agile product, data, and engineering teams in startup and/or rapid-growth environments
  • Product management experience at B2C or other software/technology companies
  • Ability to turn incomplete, conflicting, or ambiguous inputs into concrete action plans
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and self-starter attitude
  • Experience owning process management or process improvement projects
  • Self-starter with high tolerance for ambiguity
