Khan Lab School is an independent school in Mountain View, CA. Located directly underneath the Khan Academy office, our school is an embodiment of the philosophies of personalized learning that inspired the company upstairs. Our purpose is to develop new, personalized teaching practices that center around the student. We serve 138 students ages 5-15 in Mountain View, California. We provide an extended-year, extended-day, mixed-age program with a project-based learning approach. Our teaching philosophy encourages meaningful inquiry and interdisciplinary work, and we utilize blended learning to meet the needs of each student. Khan Lab School hosts a myriad of enrichment offerings as part of our Extended Day program from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The Extended Day Music Teacher should provide a balance of experience, education, and appreciation of music to students who have chosen to participate in this Extended Day offering. The syllabus of the music program should center around student exercises and projects, keeping in mind that there is limited access to physical instruments at the school. The teacher has the freedom to design and implement developmentally appropriate musical learning activities that meet the social-emotional, cognitive, creative, and physical needs of children in the program, in accordance with the goals and policies of KLS. This position reports to the Extended Day Coordinator.

Khan Lab School is an extended year school that is in session 39 weeks out of the year, January through December. Starting the week of September 4, the Extended Day Music Teacher will teach three sessions of music each week as follows:

  1. Tuesdays, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
  2. Wednesdays, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.
  3. Thursdays, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Rather than grouping students by age or academic ability, we group students according to their independence. A student’s Independence Level (IL) is a reflection of their progression in time management, communication, self-knowledge, motivation, focus, and other factors. Because these factors are influenced by development, each IL contains a group of students whose age range typically spans three years, although there can be outliers. The Extended Day Music Teacher will be teaching IL 3-4 (ages ~8-11) on Tuesdays, IL 1-3 (ages ~5-8) on Wednesdays, and IL 5-6 (ages ~12-15) on Thursdays.


Planning, Preparing, and Reflecting

  • Participates in regular Extended Day meetings (at least monthly with Extended Day Coordinator).
  • Collaborates with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of the Extended Day programs.
  • Plans, creates, and organizes a music syllabus that is suitable for the ages and skill levels of the students participating in each of the three sessions.
  • Submits a term schedule and syllabus for each music class before the beginning of each term to the Extended Day Coordinator.
  • Actively works to revise or develop learning goals and objectives according to the needs and desires of the students in each music class.

The Environment and Student Learning

  • Interacts appropriately with children during all phases of the day (including planned and unplanned activities, breaks, and transitions) in a warm, accepting, and nurturing way.
  • Interacts with each child with an awareness of his or her needs, cultural background, developmental level and family structure.
  • Encourages children to be as self-sufficient as possible.
  • Communicates with the Extended Day Coordinator about difficulties with a student.
  • Guides children's growth in the areas of social-emotional development, problem solving, self-help skills, language and communication, intellectual development, large and small motor skills, creativity, and imagination.
  • Provides consistent and positive limits and expectations, and uses positive child guidance techniques.
  • Oversees the entire classroom or group situation.
  • Maintains the room in an attractive, clean, and safe manner to ensure a conducive learning and playing environment.
  • Ensures the health and safety of the children: maintains knowledge of and administers first aid; responds to emergencies; knows and executes fire drill/earthquake procedures.


  • Have at least 1+ years experience working with young students in an academic environment
  • Prior experience teaching music to elementary school students
  • Possess or in the process of obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Music, Performing Arts, and/or Education OR demonstrates a dedicated career/continued interest in Music Performance.
  • A desire to teach in a setting that values giving up control and allowing students to gain maturity and self-motivation through independence
  • Passion for working with and engaging children in student-driven learning experiences
  • Belief in fostering children’s social-emotional capabilities
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and adaptability to change

  • KLS covers the cost of Extended Day offerings in regular tuition. Our budget allows us to compensate the Music at a rate of up to $70 per hour (depending on your experience and qualification)
