About the Opportunity

We are hiring a Database Research Engineer to design new cost-saving and performance-enhancing algorithms for our suite of data warehouse tooling products. You'll dive deep into variables that impact data warehouse performance, perform repeatable, mathematically rigorous experiments to determine impact to cost and performance, and create fast prototypes to prove or disprove hypotheses. You'll be at the forefront of innovation in a fast-moving startup, using your research, performance engineering, and data engineering skills to build cutting-edge advancements in the field of data warehouse performance.

You Will

  • Partner with product to deeply understand customer needs with regards to data warehouse cost and performance
  • Deeply research different parameters that impact database performance, and use findings to propose improvements to Keebo products
  • Create rapid, tightly-scoped proofs of concept for algorithms to improve database performance and cost
  • Mentor other engineers in database performance knowledge and rapid prototyping

You Have

  • Significant experience delivering innovative improvements to analytical databases or a PhD in Database systems plus some experience delivering improvements to analytical databases
  • Extensive experience with database performance tuning, including caching, dynamic scaling, etc.
  • Experience with and a passion for researching different parameters that impact database performance
  • Experience with and a passion for running methodical experiments, with controlled variables, and documented reproducibility
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools
  • Track record of rapidly prototyping ideas and building MVPs for customer feedback
  • Experience partnering with product to turn customer requirements into well-specified, technical work, and mentoring other engineers to do the same
  • Passion for mentoring engineers in database performance knowledge, rapid prototyping, and data engineering best practices
  • Writes clean, high quality, well-documented, readable code, with good test coverage
  • Extensive familiarity with SQL, databases, data warehouses, and big data processing tools
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies and tools on cloud platforms
  • Familiarity with modern CI/CD tools
  • Skilled at communicating effectively in a distributed environment with people across multiple time zones
  • Strong self-motivation, initiative, and adaptability

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience at a startup
  • Experience designing scalable, resilient, and reliable software architectures
  • Experience with Java, Python, and Golang
