As a Wildfire Risk Modeler at Katrisk, you will play a vital role in the development and enhancement of our wildfire risk models. Leveraging your expertise in wildfire behavior, spatial analysis, and statistical modeling, you will contribute to the development, validation, and implementation of risk models tailored to the unique challenges of wildfire-prone regions.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of wildfire risk models, incorporating the latest scientific research, data, and modeling techniques.
- Assist in conducting comprehensive analyses of wildfire risks, considering factors such as fuel types, topography, weather patterns, human factors and climate change, to assess potential losses and vulnerabilities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, engineering, and sales, to integrate wildfire risk models into our suite of products and services.
- Support in the validation and calibration of wildfire risk models to ensure alignment with observed fire behavior, historical events, and scientific benchmarks, while effectively communicating model uncertainties and limitations.
- Stay informed about emerging trends, methodologies, and technologies in wildfire risk modeling, and contribute to research initiatives to enhance model performance and address evolving client needs.
- Provide support to clients in wildfire-prone regions, including assisting in presenting analysis findings, interpreting model results, and addressing technical inquiries.
- Contribute to the documentation and maintenance of model code, datasets, and analytical methodologies.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as forestry, ecology, geography, environmental science, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience in wildfire risk modeling, spatial analysis, or related fields.
- Familiarity with fire behavior modeling concepts and tools, such as Rothermel-based models (e.g., ELMFIRE or FSIM) or similar modeling frameworks, is a plus.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, or similar, and experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Basic understanding of wildfire behavior, including factors influencing ignition, spread, and intensity.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret spatial data and communicate findings effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to cross-functional projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
