Job Overview

The successful candidate will perform critical technical support to our fire engineering and fire surveying teams and clients UK wide. Here at Jensen Hughes, our clients trust us to respond rapidly and deliver conclusive reports, of the highest technical standard. You will undertake on-site fire inspections/surveys (particularly during the construction phase as well as the operational phase) and will be involved in external wall surveys during both new build and refurbishment, undertaking fire stopping and fire compartmentation surveys, fire door inspections and from time to time fire risk assessments. You will ultimately support the fire safety disciplines at Jensen Hughes. You will report direct to our Lead Surveyor and Divisional Director.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out active and passive fire protection systems surveys and technical reports
  • Compliance assessment and understanding of the main British fire safety legislation and standards applied to different building occupancies, such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS9999, BS9991, HTM, BB100 etc.
  • Updating the passive fire protection technical knowledge base
  • Assist with quality assurance processes and validation as required
  • Undertaking external façade assessments to meet the requirement of the industry standard such as implementing the PAS 9980 methodology for existing buildings and the EWS1 process.
  • Undertaking third party oversight role of fire stopping and fire compartmentation installations.
  • Undertaking visual only fire doors surveys.
  • Managing your own client base and exceeding client expectations
  • Providing in-house CPD presentations when the need arises in your specialist area
  • Keeping updated with the latest industry guidance, product literature and sharing this knowledge with the wider organisation as part of continuous improvement.
  • Travel to client sites for site surveys and meetings will be required on a regular basis with overnight stays likely.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Degree educated in Building Surveying or other similar discipline.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own private vehicle.
  • Basic understanding of fire safety design and guidance for different building types.
  • Experience carrying out intrusive external wall surveys is desirable but not essential on a wide range of new and existing buildings such as high-rise residential, office buildings, large retail complexes and historic buildings.
  • Experience undertaking fire compartmentation surveys is desirable but not essential for internal fire stopping installations and advising the contractor based on the relevant manufacturer's literature.
  • The ability to author technical reports utilising the information obtained during the site inspection using both bespoke digital software and Microsoft Word.
  • The ability to undertake works independently and manage your own workload as required.
  • The ability to be coachable and develop your skillset further utilising the resources and expertise within the wider team.
  • A basic knowledge of the fire risk assessment process is desirable but not essential and a general appreciation of general risk/hazards within the built environment.
  • A general knowledge of construction methods, forms of construction, fire performance of external wall materials and associated cavity barriers installations.
  • Knowledge of internal passive fire protection products, fire testing regimes and the products field of application with reference to manufacturers installation details.
  • Knowledge of refurbishment schemes and managing/advising Contractors on-site.
