Interstellar Lab designs and builds systems to help life thrive on Earth and expand in space. It specializes in developing environment-controlled pods and systems that create ideal conditions for plants to grow on Earth, in LEO, on the Moon, and on Mars. Its solutions are used from sustainable farming and biodiversity conservation on Earth to astronaut life-support and food production in space. It was founded in September 2018 by entrepreneur Barbara Belvisi and now encompasses a team of over 30 engineers, scientists, and designers dedicating their time to helping life become multi-planetary.

As the Senior Life Support Systems Engineer, you will join our ECLSS team to work on the design, development, and engineering of our atmospheric, fluid, and hydraulic systems.

You previously worked on designing and assembling life support systems for manned missions in space. You are passionate about closed ecological systems and closed-loop systems. You have knowledge in physicochemical life support solutions and you are curious to explore the integration with biological systems. You have a hunger to understand our biosphere and planetary science at a fundamental level, and you are driven to deliver solutions for systems both on Earth and in Space. 

You are familiar with bio-regenerative projects like Biosphere 2, BIOS-3, or NASA’s BIOPLEX and you are looking forward to joining a team that aims to advance the state-of-the art.

You will work on our ECLSS model, the design and engineering of the controlled environment systems from atmospherics controlled systems to water and waste systems.


  • Design, build, and test innovative technologies for life support and crop cultivation systems through atmospheric and fluid systems development
  • Identify and trade technology solutions, perform literature reviews, derive recommendations, and document and present results
  • Perform modeling and analysis of components and subsystems focused on fluid flow systems and chemical processes
  • CAD and 3D model of our products’ systems
  • Work effectively with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and technicians to fabricate and test prototypes and produce results within a defined schedule and budget
  • Conduct multiple analyses, designs, and test activities simultaneously
  • Engage in both early-stage, long-term research, and near-term, program hardware design
  • Evolve prototypes into qualifiable hardware
  • Participate in project definition and execution, technology road-mapping activities, and development of external opportunities and partnerships
  • Assist the government affairs team with technical expertise for proposals


  • B.S. degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, environmental engineering, or related engineering field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an R&D or related environment applying engineering design and analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental chemical processes, thermodynamics, and fluid systems
  • Knowledge of CFD and FE analyses
  • Outstanding design, packaging, and 3D modeling skills
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in engineering analysis and design methods for performance prediction and sizing of fluid systems and chemical processes employed in life support systems, or environmental control systems for submarines, aircraft, or commercial and residential buildings
  • Experience with research and development of one or more technologies relevant to life support systems for extreme environments such as water purification and recovery technologies or air revitalization technologies
  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, experiment design, test methods, and general laboratory skills


  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline
  • Successful candidates typically have 5+ years of relevant proven experience in an R&D or related environment applying engineering design and analysis skills
  • Experience with soft goods
  • Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental science experimentation and engineering principles to develop new and innovative solutions
  • Experience with spacecraft life support/environmental control (ECLSS) technologies and architectures
  • Experience with advanced agricultural technologies such as hydroponics and/or aeroponics
  • Experience with:
    • Multiple portions of the product life cycle (concept definition through operations and use)
    • Range of model development and analyses methods, from first-order to multi-physics approaches
    • Preparing and executing test planning, test readiness reviews, and test conduct
    • Test facility instrumentation and Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Ability to transition between analysis and design to build and test activities
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Solidworks, Catia, or other CAD design tools
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, ANSYS, COMSOL, or other system analysis and multi-physics modeling tools
  • Familiarity with Biosphere 2, BIOS 3, or NASA Bioplex
