MSF-CANADA LOOKING FOR PSYCHIATRISTS

Doctors without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is currently looking for psychiatrists to fill positions in 2025 in several countries worldwide such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Mali and Chad.

Contract durations: 3 to 12 months

About the role

As a psychiatrist working with MSF, your main responsibility will be to propose, implement and improve treatment plans for patients suffering from mental health disorders, using strategies and tools adapted to their specific context and culture. An important aspect of your role will involve coordinating activities and providing training and supervision to both medical and paramedical staff in our medical projects.

Your responsibilities

  • Provide treatment to patients suffering from psychiatric disorders while paying particular attention to the cultural context.
  • Train and supervise medical and para-medical staff on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders based on MSF protocols.
  • Take part in the interventions of the mental health team when they intervene while providing support to psychologists and national counselors.
  • Ensure that psychotropic medications listed in the MSF standard medication list are available.
  • Ensure that data collection is done adequately to monitor psychiatric activities.
  • Evaluate the psychiatric services available in the country of intervention, including the possibilities of psychiatric hospitalization and the quality of these services.
  • Establish links with local health authorities.
  • Establish communication/collaboration with other medical specialists involved in the project in order to develop a multidisciplinary approach to care provision.


Requirements

  • Medical degree with registered specialization in psychiatry.
  • Intern (resident) in psychiatry with 6 validated semesters (three years) including at least 2 years in adult psychiatry.
  • A valid license/registration with your region's medical order to practice within your country of residence.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a psychiatrist with adults.
  • Minimum 2 years of diversified professional clinical experience in mental health, preferably multidisciplinary contexts.
  • International experiences with diverse populations and cultures are assets.
  • Clinical supervision and training experience is an asset.
  • Fluency in English and French.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team; excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Skills/knowledge in the following areas are desirable:
    • Mental health in emergency contexts
    • Community approach to mental health
    • Interventions based on scientific evidence (mhGAP, PFA, Evidence-Based Psychotherapy, short therapy and CBT)
