The Opportunity

insitro is changing the way that drugs are discovered and developed for patients by addressing bottlenecks throughout the drug discovery and development value chain via predictive models derived from a combination of external human cohort data and high-quality molecular data generated in-house. To enable and implement this vision, we're building a unique, high-efficiency research and pre-clinical engine that incorporates a range of modern technologies - both experimental and computational - and deploys them robustly and at scale to generate a pipeline of differentiated therapeutics..

In this executive-level role, reporting to the CSO, you will work with the CEO, the Executive Team, and colleagues across the company to build an industrialized cell biology platform that creates biology insight generation, validation and therapeutic assessment using advanced machine learning and automation. You will also construct the preclinical infrastructure (Safety Assessment, CMC, supply chain, QA/QC) internally and with partners to translate these laboratory-generated Insights (combined with those from Clinical Machine Learning) into high-quality clinical candidates, and support their subsequent Clinical Development. Also, you will manage and extend a state-of-the-art core laboratory providing Omics and Materials Management capabilities to the scientific teams. Also, you will play a role in the implementation and maturation of R&D organizational structures that facilitate smooth goal setting, governance and execution in a matrixed organization. Finally, you will participate in the operation and evolution of the company and management of an emerging portfolio of diverse partnered and wholly owned therapeutics.

Your specific responsibilities will include the following:

  • Oversee the development and deployment of productionized laboratory workflows and processes along the R&D value chain that contribute to pipeline advancement (target identification and credentialing to therapeutics discovery).
  • Manage a Research Operations team that includes core functions, Materials Management and Omics capabilities
  • Build Safety Assessment, CMC, supply chain and QA/QC capabilities (internally and externally) that will support the rapid transition of insitro to a multi-modality clinical stage company
  • Establish processes for data and meta-data collection that support our research workflows while also enabling future regulatory filings.
  • Oversee our lab and facilities operations, including oversight of existing space and future build.
  • Ensure that R&D efforts are aligned with our goals and with fulfilling business deliverables to partners, even in the face of scientific uncertainty.

You will join an exciting biotech startup that has long-term stability due to significant funding, while maintaining a culture of innovation. You will work with a very accomplished team, learn a broad range of skills, and help shape insitro's culture, strategic direction, and impact on patient outcomes. Join us, and help make a difference!

About You

  • PhD in biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or equivalent experience
  • 15+ years of practical work experience in the biopharma industry
  • Established operations leader with demonstrated accomplishment in complex organizations that span from discovery through scalable execution
  • A documented history of success in the rapid development and introduction of complex technology products, which are integrated at the systems level
  • An organizational builder and manager with the ability to understand the big picture and translate it into detailed, operational execution
  • Experience in overseeing production-scale technology platforms relevant to the pharma R&D pipeline
  • Considerable familiarity with high throughput biological or chemical lab environments involving extensive data collection
  • Approaches decisions with data-driven rigor, in a way that integrates information from multiple partners
  • Record of execution in work environments that are dynamic, and characterized by expansion
  • Works with colleagues across a range of disciplines and to create agreement across diverse partners
  • Enthusiasm for bold, goals and a passion for helping transform the lives of patients

Nice to Have

  • Demonstrated affinity to the use of computational methods to accelerate drug discovery; exposure to AI/ML methods a considerable plus
  • Understanding of the value of human genetics and human-derived models in drug discovery
  • Broad knowledge of technology platforms that are relevant to drug discovery and development
  • Experience working under the resource and time constraints of an early stage startup

About insitro

insitro is a drug discovery and development company using machine learning (ML) and data at scale to decode biology for transformative medicines. At the core of insitro’s approach is the convergence of in-house generated multi-modal cellular data and high-content phenotypic human cohort data. We rely on these data to develop ML-driven, predictive disease models that uncover underlying biologic state and elucidate critical drivers of disease. These powerful models rely on extensive biological and computational infrastructure and allow insitro to advance novel targets and patient biomarkers, design therapeutics and inform clinical strategy. insitro is advancing a wholly owned and partnered pipeline of insights and therapeutics in neuroscience, oncology and metabolism. Since launching in 2018, insitro has raised over $700 million from top tech, biotech and crossover investors, and from collaborations with pharmaceutical partners. Whatever your decision, it will not be considered in the hiring process or thereafter. Any information that you do provide will be recorded and maintained in a confidential file.

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
