About the Role

As our Senior Tax Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, planning, and reporting within the organization. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations, minimizing tax liabilities, and implementing tax strategies to optimize financial outcomes. You'll be a valued member of the Finance and Accounting team where you will report to our Senior Accounting Manager. On a consistent basis, you will collaborate closely with other members of the finance teams, external auditors and state and local tax authorities to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Additionally, you will provide strategic guidance to senior management on tax-related matters and ultimately help us maintain local, state and federal compliance that will aid in our continued business success.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. SALT (State And Local Tax) Compliance
      • Prepare and review state and local taxes ensuring accuracy, timeliness and compliance with relevant regulations, including but not limited to
        • Business licenses
        • Sales tax
        • Gross receipts tax
        • Commercial rent tax
        • Personal property tax
        • VAT
        • Business Income & Receipts Tax (BIRT), if applicable
      • Coordinate with Legal to ensure Secretary of State (SOS) status, both domestic and foreign, are in active/good standing.
      • Coordinate with third party tax preparers/advisors and auditors to manage tax filings and resolve any issues or discrepancies.
      • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, assessing their impact on the organization and implementing necessary adjustments.
      • Interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures, analyze tax situations, detect violations, prepare reports, maintain confidentiality and protect privacy.
      • Timely filing & payment of localized taxes
      • Researching, monitoring, advising and coordinating timely filing and payment deadlines. 
      • Develop and implement tax strategies to minimize the organization's tax liabilities while maximizing financial efficiency.
      • Analyze business transactions, investments, and organizational structures to identify tax planning opportunities.
      • Provide guidance to senior management on the tax implications of various business decisions and strategies.
    1. Tax Related Financial Reporting:
      • Prepare and review tax provisions for financial statements in accordance with accounting standards.
      • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of tax-related information for internal and external stakeholders.
      • Collaborate with finance teams to integrate tax considerations into financial planning and forecasting processes.
    2. Localized Tax Audits and Disputes:
      • Manage tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities, including responding to information requests and negotiating settlements.
      • Develop and maintain documentation to support tax positions and defend against potential challenges.
      • Work with legal counsel as needed to resolve tax disputes and mitigate risks.
      • Manage 3rd party agency relationships for specific localized projects
    3. Cross Functional relationship management
      • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture, promoting teamwork and knowledge sharing, with other teams within the finance department,  
      • Set goals and provide feedback to manager and finance team members to drive continuous improvement.
      • Gathering requisite tax documentation from internal teams as necessary
      • Working with external stakeholders to problem solve and project manage tax related issues through to successful filing. 

 

Job Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience (typically 3+ years) in localized tax compliance, planning, and reporting, preferably in a public accounting firm or corporate tax department.
  • Strong knowledge of state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Experience researching local tax laws and applying requirements to business practices.
  • Proficiency in tax accounting principles and financial reporting standards.
  • Excellent project solving and project management skills 
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Excel; experience with ERP systems (e.g. Netsuite/Oracle) is a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively

Compensation: 

The annual base compensation range for this role is between $75,000 and $85,000. The successful candidate's actual base compensation will be based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to work experience, job-related knowledge, skills, and professional qualifications.

You will also be eligible for an annual bonus calculated based on individual and company performance.
