About the Role:

Scaling any business as rapidly as we are is both exciting and challenging. Our task for the years ahead is to build off our exceptional business and team fundamentals to aggressively grow our network and become landlords’ partner of choice for all flexible commercial uses.

As Controller, you will manage a motivated team of 6-10 accountants that prepare monthly and annual financials for our entire network of over 40 locations, as well as oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable teams. Using your advanced knowledge of accounting principles, you will provide guidance and direction to the team as they navigate the rapid growth, changing nature, and increasing complexity of our business.

The role is based in New York City.

Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise employees performing financial reporting, accounting, billing, and collections
  • Continually develop, expand and improve/streamline month end close, financial reporting procedures, and help drive the reduction of the close timeline by working with a team of 6-10 accountants (mix of senior accountants, staff accountants, and AP lead)
  • Engage in strategic discussions with senior leadership leveraging accounting knowledge to innovate in sales, deal structuring, tax, and other key functions
  • Facilitate discussion between operations, corporate management, and finance regarding financial results of operations
  • Participate in ongoing critical projects (e.g. international expansion analysis, M&A integration, new business line accounting, etc.) and recommend solutions to complex accounting challenges
  • Continually assess and implement process improvements, including anticipating improvements to become more efficient as the company scales
  • Oversee overall A/R policies and procedures; including systems, communication for invoicing, and revenue recognition
  • Oversee overall A/P policies and procedures; including systems, communication for payment cycle, and expense recognition
  • Be heavily involved with implementation of new lease Accounting Standard, ASC 842, working closely with internal/external teams to transition the existing treatment of leases to comply with ASC 842 standards
  • Review and approve journal entries and GL reconciliations prepared by staff/senior accountants on a weekly and monthly basis
  • Design and implement financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing financial policies, controls and procedures
  • Support the year-end financial statement audit, as well as any statutory audits that may arise
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reports requirements and tax filings
  • Manage external relationships with third party providers, payment and accounting software providers, and auditors

Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate complex accounting terms to senior executives, audit committee, and across the wider organization
  • Experience in managing high performing accounting teams of at least 3 people
  • BS/BA in Accounting with 10+ years of direct experience in the field
  • CPA required
  • Deep expertise in relevant accounting and control practices and experience with general ledger functions, month end/year end close process, and financial reporting
  • Commercially minded with startup experience a strong plus
  • Enthusiastic about designing and implementing systems and policies
  • Self starter with exceptional prioritization skills excited to work in a high paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Extremely strong attention to detail and exceptionally organized
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, with intermediate/advanced Excel
  • Previous experience with ERP system (Netsuite, MS Dynamics, etc) preferred
