Impossible Foods seeks a highly motivated individual with a strong background in molecular biology. This scientist level position will help build a robust platform for small molecule discovery to guide protein purification efforts and work collaboratively with other Research and Development teams. Impossible Foods is a Silicon Valley startup founded by scientists from Stanford and UC Berkeley with top tier venture backing. We are developing novel technologies to create great new foods from plant-derived ingredients that will transform the world's food production system, greatly reducing its environmental impact and increasing its efficiency and productivity.
We seek an exceptional full-time Scientist, with a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and in vitro selection methods (e.g. phage display, SELEX). The candidate’s primary responsibility will include development of recombinant DNA libraries for DNA-programmed chemical synthesis,screening of small molecule libraries on target proteins, NGS sample preparation, and characterization of hits in biological or biochemical assays.Preferred candidate will have experience in high-throughput work. 

  • Creation of new types of recombinant DNA libraries.
  • Development of new selections and screens using DNA programmed libraries of compounds.
  • QC of DNA library, NGS sample preparation and submission.
  • Development and validation of leads small molecules in orthogonal assays.
  • Expertise in organic synthesis is preferred.
  • High level of productivity and creativity with strong problem solving skills.
Education and Experience
  • The qualified candidate will have a PhD in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry with up to 5 years industry experience or BS/MS in relevant field with eight or more years industry experience is required. 
  • An innovative problem-solver who works well in teams. He or she will bring a strong track record of success in scientific problem-solving and be comfortable applying his/her skills to the development of a new technology that leverages both chemistry and biology to solve difficult problems in small molecule discovery. 
  • Proficiency in molecular biology using a wide variety of techniques, particularly in the areas of DNA library assembly (oligo assembly), transcription/reverse transcription, and PCR/qPCR. 
  • Must have excellent oral and written communications skills, record-keeping and organizational skills. Good data record-keeping and organizational skills are essential. 
  • Familiarity with laboratory high-throughput automation and robotics are a plus. 
  • Must be proficient with spreadsheet (Excel) software. Experience with electronic laboratory notebooks. 
  • Enthusiasm in science with a motivation of making contributions in a team environment.
