Role: Principal Medical Copywriter (Global Medical)

ROLE MISSION

Working in partnership with our client, the  Principal Medical Writer oversees and creates powerful and impactful copy for all forms of printed collateral, web pages, email campaigns, social media, presentations, advertising, marketing, and sales materials. Leads medical/scientific content in strategic work ensuring the scientific message is valid.

ABOUT THE TEAM YOU WILL BE JOINING

Reporting to the (TBC), the Principal Medical Writer sits within a small but growing medical advertising team. 

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING IN YOUR ROLE

Writing and editing  

  • Produce original and support junior team members to produce exceptional medical copywriting across both print and digital channels, providing new ideas and while maintaining a high-quality scientific grounding   
  • Review / undertake research and develop an understanding of the client’s target audience and competitor products to help to develop a compelling story for the brand/audience  
  • Provide strategic support and own insight discovery to help leverage products messaging and asset delivery. Present these findings to rationalise message choice 
  • Oversee the team in the delivery all copy required and ensure consistency of high standards and accuracy across all messaging to the agreed briefs and established brand values 
  • Excellent briefing and reviewing skills. Challenging client briefs and providing suggestions on added value items 
  • Working in collaboration with design team to ensure copy is optimized for its destination 
  • As a senior member of the team continually feedback to all members of the wider team effectively, ensuring learnings are taken forward onto future projects  
  • Oversee the quality control processes and procedures from a copy perspective   
  • Ensure the accuracy of all information, data and referencing for the projects you and the team produce 
  • Address internal and external comments on your work intelligently and question any that are inappropriate, inaccurate, or unclear  
  • Ensure validated, marked-up references are produced by the writing team  
  • Very strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and balance several priorities, pressures and demands  

Scientific content and expertise 

  • Intimately understand client and competitor products, therapy areas, portfolio and commercial strategy in the context of the current and future market  
  • Keep up to date with industry codes of practice/legislation and external issues or events that may affect existing accounts and lead team updates 
  • Work across several therapy areas to support junior writers with question and provide insights where required 
  • Proactively research the industry for news and insights that could support the client strategically 

Relationships  

  • Lead on complex and oversee on less complex client projects with other writers 
  • Set and oversee, working with other members of the writing team to ensure that departmental objectives are met  
  • Plan yours and the wider team’s workload and flag any issues with the Account Director 
  • Contribute to team resourcing and recruitment 
  • Exemplary external communication 
  • Leading scientific voice in the communication for both internal and external audiences  
  • Energetic and hard-working, with a professional, positive and mature attitude and demeanour, attention to detail and excellent quality-control skills  
  • Be a senior voice in the team and exemplify company values and behaviours 
  • Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal confidently with people at all levels within the business, and externally when appropriate 
  • Ability to develop and motivate staff 

Financial  

  • When appropriate, contribute to development of project planning and resourcing needs inputting on cost estimates  
  • Have awareness of time usage of the team and project burn 
  • Have an awareness of project costs against agreed budgets and notify the Client Services team of any changes to specification at the earliest opportunity  
  • Always communicate clearly to team members, schedule and budget guidelines and contribute to prioritisation discussions across teams 

WHAT SKILLS WILL HELP YOU BE SUCCESSFUL 

  • Established skills in generating, overseeing and coaching junior members of the team to produce well-written copy for various print and digital channels that meets the brief, is appropriate for the target audience, and is delivered to budget in a timely manner 
  • Educated to at least degree level in a scientific field. A higher degree would be an advantage 
  • 8+ years of experience in a healthcare advertising agency or relevant industry 
  • Proficient in standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)  
  • Experience in line-managing junior writers and leading a team 
  • Experienced and confident in leading communication with clients 
  • Awareness of Veeva PromoMats and experience of Client review process  
  • Exemplify company values and behaviours 
  • Ability to create original, impactful, and engaging work for digital and print campaigns 
  • Well-organised and able to plan work effectively 
  • Be self-motivated, proactive, and collaborative, with a can-do attitude and keenness to learn on the job 
  • Energetic and hard-working, with a professional and  mature attitude and demeanour 
  • An excellent team player: collaborative and adept at building relationships with stakeholders at all levels 
  • Developing presentation skills 
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and balance several priorities, pressures and demands 
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team 
  • The ability to work well under pressure and manage workloads and multiple projects effectively 
  • Experience in healthcare advertising sector / medical communications. 
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in copy development related to:    
    • Digital
    •  Print  
    • Motion Graphics  
    • Web Design
