What we do:

The Hyundai Urban Air Mobility Division is looking for a technical leader for actuation and mechanical system design.  This position will be a technical contributor and management role directing a small team in the design of flight critical and secondary fly-by-wire actuation and controls for the air vehicle.  This position will be responsible for the flight control system actuators and cockpit controls. This position will also be responsible for guiding the design and supervising other mechanical designers in the design of unique mechanisms for all aspects of the vehicle control surfaces.  This includes but is not limited to conceptual design, 3 dimensional CAD design, kinematic mechanism design and analysis, FEA analysis on critical load path components, and performing and supervising detail design responsibilities to include the development of reduced dimensioned models/drawings for fabrication.  Hands-on experience in fabrication and rapid prototyping experience are highly desired for this position. 

What you can do: 

  • Lead design and analysis of the vehicle’s mechanical flight controls and actuation design throughout the product design lifecycle including trade studies, conceptual design, requirements development, preliminary design, detail design, engineering release, technical reviews, procurement/manufacturing, assembly and ground/flight testing
  • Primary responsibilities include design, analysis and specifications for:
    • Mechanical flight control layout/preliminary design
    • Actuation requirements definition
    • Actuator design and development with suppliers
    • Kinematics modeling
    • Motion envelopment modeling
    • Clearance and lost motion analysis
    • Installation Assembles and Part Detail Design
    • Support integration to air vehicle with cross-disciplinary teams
    • Directing design and integration activities, coordinating suppliers’ deliverables and schedules, and reporting status
    • Preparing and presenting technical performance, cost, and schedule material for major design and requirements reviews to program management and engineering technical community
    • Development and coordination of system qualification and functional test plans and execution
    • Determining appropriate corrective action concerning system performance and reliability arise from SIL testing, production quality issues, ground/flight testing, and customer feedback
  • Interface with Flight Controls, Airframe, and other IPTs for controls interface
  • Define and maintain progress metrics to keep team and management up-to-date on status, KPIs, risk, and mitigation plans
  • Communicate team status to management

  • Demonstrated experience in mechanism/actuation system design such as:
    • Rotorcraft mechanical flight controls and crew station layout
    • Landing Gear actuation
    • Flap/Swash Plate Actuation system Design
  • Demonstrated experience in application of electro-mechanical actuation for flight controls
  • Demonstrated experience in design and development of fly-by-wire flight control systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing aircraft suppliers during development phase of aircraft program is required
  • Proven self-starter requiring minimal supervision, with excellent foresight and problem-solving skills
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with customers, internal and external suppliers, as well as horizontal integrations across the other teams to complete design, analysis, and program tasks
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root cause determination and corrective action, and have the ability to work effectively within a team
  • Experience with requirements and configuration management
  • Familiarity with commercial qualification and certification of aircraft systems.
    • Including application of standards such as ARP4754, ARP4761, DO-160G, etc.

    • Catia
    • Matlab/Simulink
    • FEA Tools
    • Failure Hazard Analysis and Fault Tree Analysis
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both verbal and written) are required
  • Experience with MS Office Suite of Products
  • Bachelor’s Degree Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering is required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a relevant engineering field will also be considered
  • Master’s Degree in the Engineering disciplines mentioned above is a positive
