Human Interest is on a mission to ensure that people in all lines of work have access to retirement benefits.

Social security, our nation’s retirement safety net, is projected to be insolvent as soon as 2035, making employer-sponsored 401(k) plans the primary retirement savings vehicle in the U.S. Nearly half of all working Americans are not saving enough for their future because they are employed by a company that doesn’t offer a retirement plan. Human Interest is changing that by making it affordable and accessible for small and medium sized businesses to offer employees a path to financial independence through retirement savings.

Our values are the guiding principles we use to build solutions for plan administrators and participants. They reflect our point of view on what’s important and what’s right: In it for customers, autonomous & accountable, outcomes driven, inclusive collaboration, and decisive.

The Legal Counsel will join Human Interest as the second lawyer in our legal department, reporting directly to our Head of Legal.

What you get to do everyday:

  • Provide business-minded advice and counsel to the Head of Legal and senior management regarding all aspects of the business, from corporate matters to compliance, commercial agreements, corporate matters, privacy, litigation and product counseling
  • Work cross-functionally and coordinate interactions with various stakeholders including sales, compliance, customer success, engineering, and product
  • Own broad responsibility for all commercial matters, including developing efficiencies in the negotiation process
  • Provide strategic advice on design, implementation, and evolution of partnership and referral programs and SaaS procurement
  • Interact with finance and accounting teams
  • Partner with the compliance team to provide insights into training and monitoring, risk assessments, and policy drafting and implementation
  • Own and independently manage projects
  • Manage outside counsel

What you bring to the role:

  • 8+ years of combined experience at a top tier law firm and in-house
  • Familiarity with ERISA and SEC rules and regulations applicable to 401k companies and investment advisors coupled with a desire and ability to quickly become an expert in these areas
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, and an ability to be the primary in-house attorney on certain corporate projects
  • The ability to work autonomously, quickly adapt, a track record of providing sound and practical advice and solutions, and a mindset to work within a fast-growing startup environment
  • A mix of substantive experience and desire to learn and grow with Human Interest
  • A desire to be a generalist, not a specialist!
  • Sound judgement and a track record as a problem solver, sometimes under time pressure
  • Excellent communication and project management skills with the ability to work independently
  • Membership in at least one state bar (preferably California or New York)
