About The Role

Humane's System Software team is responsible for firmware, operating system software, hardware-accelerated algorithms, and core developer frameworks supporting our products.  We serve as the glue between our hardware teams and our higher-level software teams, and delight in finding creative solutions to complex, interdisciplinary problems as we bring our product visions to life.

As a senior software engineer on this team, you will customize and extend OS-level frameworks for a variety of prototyping and product development initiatives.  You will empower developers to use all of the hardware and system-level resources available in our products.  You will collaborate closely with our device, security, and cloud services software engineering teams to enable delightful user experiences, robust connectivity, and optimal performance per watt.

What You Might Do

  • Develop technical designs to meet high-level requirements and coordinate implementation across our software teams
  • Customize and extend Java, Kotlin, C++, and Rust frameworks on an Android platform base for prototypes and products
  • Design SDKs and APIs that empower developers to maximize creative expression and overall utility of our hardware platforms
  • Integrate vendor libraries into the BSP for wheels we don't need to reinvent here, eg OTA FW updates, device metrics, and bug reporting
  • Drive improvements to performance, power consumption, and stability across all aspects of our device software

Essential Qualifications 

  • 5+ years experience developing Java, Kotlin, JNI, C++, and/or Rust code for Android devices
  • Experience developing a fork of AOSP for custom hardware platforms
  • Familiarity with the Android Framework and HALs
  • Ability to collaborate in a psychologically safe and healthy team environment

Preferred Skills

  • Experience developing a fork of AOSP for custom hardware platforms
  • Experience with Android Telephony, Wireless, or Multimedia frameworks
  • Experience developing end-to-end features from kernel drivers through framework APIs

Salary range: $185,000 - $235,000
