What do Product Designers do at Hudl?
We make the process above as headache-free as possible. We lead small, cross-functional teams in creating and shipping clear, delightful user experiences. Here’s how we do it.
First, designers conduct primary user research understand our customers’ latent needs. Designers learn why first-hand. There’s no requirements doc handed down from on high. Next, they rough out concepts to test with developers, QA, and their product manager. They sketch, they mock, and they prototype the key interactions. And often, they throw big pieces out when it doesn't connect in a user test.
Once the concepts do start clicking, Product Designers start crafting the interface first (HTML & CSS for web apps, Interface Builder for iOS, etc.). They team up with a developer to improve the code and wire it into back-end systems. Finally, they ensure the visuals, interactions, and IA are consistent throughout the flows and are coherent with the rest of the experience.
Designers don’t let go after the first release. They work with PMs as we iterate, rolling-out improvements to the products as they see real use. Practically, all this means you carry the squad with beautiful visual design, thoughtful interaction design and front-end code.
What about Team Leads?
Product Design Team Leads manage groups of 2-6 designers on the same business unit (called tribes). Depending on level of experience or needs, between 25%-50% of a manager’s time goes toward management responsibilities. The remaining percentage goes toward direct contributions and functional work on products.
In other words, Team Leads are not full-time managers. They work on the same stuff as their direct reports.
- Have been directly responsible for the performance of a team of designers.
- Excel in giving and receiving respectfully blunt feedback and critique.
- Are just as proud of your organization tools (docs, spreadsheets) as you are your best pieces of UI design work.
- Loosely hold strong beliefs, about what’s best for the product, your team and most importantly, customers.
- Understand that technical, business, and design constraints factor into every product decision.
- Successfully challenge your top performers and decisively support your lowest. You coach both with great care.
- Notice trends in team performance and act to share if it’s good—course correct if it’s bad.
- Will coordinate with other Team Leads to recruit, hire, and balance a team of 25+ designers.
- Know how and when to tactfully say, “No."
- Have tricks up your sleeve to boost the operational effectiveness of design teams (better quality work, on time, more often).
- Are unafraid to ship small, quick experiments to validate your assumptions and opinions.
- Look at every management challenge as an opportunity to grow yourself and your team.
We love our remote workers. Currently, a quarter of our product team works remotely so we're set up really well for it. But we can only hire if you live/work in or are moving to California, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, or Nebraska.
