As an Engineering Manager, you will be joining our Payments team.

HousingAnywhere Payments is a payments solution that helps landlords collect all their rental related payments with HousingAnywhere while allowing tenants to easily and securely make these payments with the help of a variety of payment methods.

Our Payments product is growing rapidly, currently transacting 10 times the volume it was 2 years ago. It’s our ambition to extend the current value proposition of the product to make it a self-standing reconciliation and payments solution for landlords, which can be used for all their rentals, including those that were not acquired through the HousingAnywhere marketplace.

Besides the Payments product, the Payments team is also responsible for our payments platform & tooling, which supports our Finance Operations team with timely paying out money to our landlords.

You will be accountable for the Payments team, and leading the future development of the product, together with your team and the Product Manager. You will ensure the quality and scalability of the services that power the product.

As a senior member of our team, you will be expected to embrace and contribute to our technical vision and practices, and grow your team through mentoring and coaching. You will be an ambassador of our culture and a role model for your team, and you will ensure the our culture is nurtured within your team.

We are evolving HousingAnywhere in a rental platform. We do so by applying Domain Driven Design, building an event-driven architecture while making heavy use of DDD, DevOps and Agile principles and Contract First Development practices.

The role of Engineering Manager Payments team

We expect Engineering Managers to be technical and have a technical background. However we don’t expect Engineering Manager to do heavy hands on work, but rather sets the right technical direction. 

Expect an effort of 40% spent in people management, 40% spent in management of project and design solutions, 20% coding and/or helping others through pair programming or code reviews.

The role can be described in four pillar:


  • Set your team for success to deliver on the roadmap effectively and in time.
  • Manage projects assigned to the team are correctly scoped and delivered in time through delegation
  • Create and evolve processes to make your team effective, and successful.  
  • Ensure work delivered by your team is up to our engineering standards, and provide guidance through code reviews and pair programming to less senior team members.
  • Unblock your team through effective decision making and leadership on difficult technical challenges.
  • Work with other teams on cross team projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure operational excellence of the services and systems managed by your team. Ensure your team is equipped to handle and resolve outages effectively.
  • Talk to stakeholders and proactively keep them informed about status and impediments of projects.


  • Collaborate on setting priorities and roadmap with Product Managers
  • Set ambitious and achievable quarterly goals for your team in line with product development goals and strategy.
  • Instil a sense of urgency to your team towards company goals, and ensure work is aligned with goals.
  • Help your team focus on impact and outcome through good prioritisation and planning.
  • Collaborate with other managers to align on management practises and guidelines.
  • Resolve conflicts and differences of opinion and help the people involved align and move forward towards the common goals.
  • Provide technical direction in projects for the team and unblock projects by making decisions when needed.

  • Manage performance review, and handle high performers and low performers effectively.

Who we look for

The type of work experience for this position is usually found with around 8 years of development experience in the field, focused on building complex systems at scale, and 2 years of experience managing high performing, diverse and inclusive teams.

You find energy in helping people and help them grow and be effective in their job. You prefer to act as a multiplier rather than a maker. You understand that your job is less about development, but more about enabling, managing and delegating. You are still hands-on when needed, especially during code reviews and technical decisions.

You are interested in new technologies and you continuously seek to improve yourself. You stay up to date with the field, and you share your knowledge openly with your colleagues and the tech community.

You can lead teams working across the stack from frontend (React/Typescript) to backend (Go/Postgres).
