Role Overview

Make your mark on Jewish student life by joining Hillel of Metro Detroit as the Assistant Director. You will drive Hillel forward by thinking big and implementing with excellence on a day-to-day basis. As you lead people and programs, you will help students connect to Jewish life, learning, and Israel.

Hillel of Metro Detroit (HMD) is the Detroit community’s foremost organization for engaging local Jewish college-age students.  HMD enriches Jewish identity, furthers Jewish journeys and inspires involvement in the community.  Located at Wayne State University, HMD serves six local schools: Wayne State University, Oakland University, Oakland Community College, Lawrence Technological University, University of Detroit Mercy and University of Michigan Dearborn.

This position will provide you with the opportunity to impact students, while growing professionally. 

What You’ll Do

  • With the Executive Director, design and execute an engagement and programming strategy to connect Jewish students with Hillel of Metro Detroit’s mission
  • Develop a student leadership structure to support robust program activities, Shabbat, holiday celebrations, and meaningful Jewish experiences
  • Supervise, mentor, and support the growth of the program team
  • Create and maintain strategic partnerships with the university communities, including student affairs and other members of the administration

On a day to day basis you will

  • Recruit, supervise, and lead the program staff team and student leadership, including managing the program staff hiring and training processes
  • Oversee the program budget, distribute funds, account for costs, and pursue grant opportunities.
  • Establish annual program goals, be responsible for planning, marketing, implementation and assessment
  • Build meaningful relationships with key university staff and faculty that yield productive partnerships
  • Lead weekly staff meetings
  • Support the Development team and Executive Director in core fundraising activities, including donor relations, strategic fundraising conversations, and special events
  • Be an informal Jewish educator and Jewish role model

What You’ve Accomplished

  • 5+ years in Jewish, experiential, or higher education
  • Experience as a professional in a Jewish nonprofit organization is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Proven success in:
  • Hiring and managing a team. Excellent supervision skills and ability to coach others to achieve outcomes
  • Relating to college students
  • Building relationships with leaders within education or the Jewish communal space
  • Developing and/or implementing a strategic plan, including budgeting, reporting and tracking data
  • Management of multiple projects while maintaining quality.

  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills and adapt to new technologies

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $75,000 - $85,000
