Herophilus is reinventing drug discovery for complex brain disorders by combining human brain models, scaled biology and machine learning to decode brain disease, from genetics to neural computation. We’re building a world-class high-throughput cell culture, microscopy, and bioassay platform that requires integration of industry-standard and custom proprietary robotic systems. We harness the resulting deep biological insights to systematically discover novel drugs for complex neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases with a higher probability of technical success. 

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the Director of R&D Project Management will be responsible for providing project management support for cross functional initiatives that build Herophilus’ drug discovery platform and advance preclinical drug programs. You will work collaboratively across scientific and technical functional groups to develop, organize and execute internal and partnered R&D projects and partner with the Executive team to build the strategic roadmap of the company.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Engaging with scientific and technical leads, cross-functional teams and senior leadership to develop and execute R&D projects towards their goals
  • Developing cross-functional project / program plans, timelines, agendas, budgets, resourcing requirements, ongoing summaries and other tools required to coordinate projects / programs
  • Managing outsourced pre-clinical activities for drug programs, which includes establishing scopes of work and timelines, managing proposals, coordinating sample shipments, documentation and tracking, managing reports and data transfers
  • Anticipating, identifying and communicating risks, dependencies and other issues which pose a challenge to achieving project/program goals; proposing and implementing plans to resolve such issues
  • Identifying gaps in research platform capabilities and processes; working with functional leads to translate them into specifications for further platform improvements
  • Facilitating key internal and partnered R&D project meetings, including scheduling, developing agendas, writing minutes and supporting action item follow-up
  • Collecting, collating, and formatting meeting presentations and data from internal stakeholders into project / program packages and effectively communicating to key stakeholders
  • Leading sub teams, ad hoc working groups and special projects as needed to support project, program and company goals and activities
  • Building and leading a project management team to align with growth of the organization
  • Collaborating with Executive team to set aggressive company goals and build the strategic roadmap of the company

The ideal candidate will possess a technical mindset, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, superb organizational skills, strong understanding of biomedical research and drug discovery, independence, and an ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • BS or other advanced degree in Life Sciences/Chemistry field, plus 12+ years of relevant industrial experience
  • Experience in cross-functional project management activities and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders from different technical disciplines
  • Solid understanding of early drug discovery and preclinical development principles, concepts, practices, and standards
  • Proficiency in scientific, technical and business elements associated with R&D projects and drug programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, slide drafting and presentation skills for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage across multiple functional groups within a highly matrixed organization
  • Prior experience in interfacing with discovery and preclinical development CROs/CMOs and partnering with companies on R&D collaborations in an alliance management role
  • Highly independent, flexible, energized and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • A mindset to become a power user of our internal software tools for data and documentation management
  • Advanced knowledge and skill with GSuite ecosystem and experience with project management solutions
