Helion is hiring an early career Mechanical Engineer to own hardware designs for Helion’s fusion generator prototypes. This position provides a unique opportunity to solve multidisciplinary engineering problems that are critical to deploying fusion energy to the world. It also provides the unique opportunity to be a culture driver on a small, rapidly growing, and fast-moving team.  

   

What you’ll be doing –  

In this position, you will own the design and building of hardware that will deliver clean, low-cost, and reliable electricity to the world. You will take ownership of subsystem designs, understand/improve their requirements, learn from historical approaches, design novel hardware, and test your solutions.   

  • Be responsible for subsystem designs including: electromagnets, structural, fluid, thermal & control systems 
  • Designing fusion hardware within CAD Software (NX, Solidworks, etc) 
  • Performing analysis with tools like ANSYS and holding design reviews to gather feedback and iterate to a fully functioning system 
  • Learning from experts to expand your engineering skillset and domain knowledge  
  • Working hands-on alongside skilled technicians to build and improve your hardware designs  
  • Troubleshooting and fixing hardware issues as they arise on integrated fusion generators  

  

About you –  

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with 1-2 years of collegiate internship or Project Team Experience (e.g. SAE, Rocket Club, etc) 
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams  
  • Experience managing complex engineering projects (including schedule ownership)  
  • Ability to apply both engineering first-principles and methodical thinking to challenging problems  
  • Hands-on exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, fluids) 
  • Experience with CAD software (NX, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Desired-Not-Required – Experience with FEA software (ANSYS Maxwell, FEMAP, etc.)
  • Desired-Not-Required – Experience in the engineering of plasma or high-voltage systems

Per Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act the range for this position is $95 - 144k. Actual salary is based on education, experience, and other qualifying skill sets.
