Hazel Technologies Inc., founded in 2015, is a USDA-funded company that develops new technologies to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of fresh produce throughout the global supply chain. Job Description:  

The Senior Innovation Scientist will focus on bringing new technologies to life through co-creation with partners, creation of functional industrial prototypes and working with early adopter customers to validate these prototypes. Deliverables are prototypes with increasing maturity level. 

Responsibilities:  

  • Independently develop new ideas for enhancing existing products.
  • Independently develop new ideas for generating new products.
  • Deep knowledge of product development from the perspective of their knowledge base.
  • Established history of cross-disciplinary work with tangible output (could be papers, patents, products)
  • Excellent scientific communication skills defined by an understanding of how to deliver a hypothesis-driven scientific narrative. 
  • Designs robust and considered experimental plans that generate significant learning with considered use of resources.
  • Driven individual contributor who is passionate about technical leadership of projects, as demonstrated by successfully leading technical components of projects to deliver new products and product lifecycle enhancements. 
  • Able to successfully mentor other individual contributors to enhance the quality of their work output and help them mature as individual contributors. 
  • Actively seeks out understanding of product applications and customer needs by traveling to the field and interviewing stakeholders (internal and external) about their technological needs.
  • Work is almost always accepted without additional edits. 
  • Generates new ideas for products and product improvements that contribute meaningfully to company intellectual property (algorithms, trade secret, proprietary data, and patents). 
  • Acts as a technical information conduit within the organization, communicating frequently with other teams to address and understand problems.

Qualifications:   

  • Significant, direct work experience engaging with industrial and commercial questions (5+ years), particularly in a multidisciplinary work environment. 
  • PhD. Required in a field such as (in a non-limiting fashion) Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Materials Science, and Plant Biology. 
  • Significant history of peer-reviewed publication (patents and papers) in their chosen field. 
  • Ability to move items up to 30lbs around the office.

Expected Salary Range: $130,000-$160,000 annually, plus the ability to participate in Hazel’s medical, dental, vision, 401k program (with Company match), generous paid time off, complimentary membership to the gym at the Company’s Chicago headquarters, a partial work-from-home stipend, and participation in the Company’s social events and happy hours.

The range above is a good faith estimate of the base salary we expect to offer for this position. The actual salary offered may differ based upon the skills, qualifications, and experience of any particular candidate.
