The Role: Product Design Engineer

This is a chance to join a growing startup at the most exciting stage with the opportunity to build popular products. You will join a team that is designing the core hardware for software services and engaged customers. You will be directly responsible for designing and validating subsystems within the final product. You should be familiar with factories, international supplier relationships, and working past language barriers to communicate design intent. You’ll have a lot of autonomy and responsibility as you integrate into our core engineering team and quickly become a lead within a growing hardware engineering department. 

The Product Design Engineer exists within the Hardware Team, reporting to VP of Hardware. The role is responsible for:

  • Design novel, best-in-class mechanisms in partnership with the industrial design team
  • Own optimization of mechanical performance 
  • Optimize hardware for size, weight, cost, reliability, etc
  • Proactively identify and resolve any hardware development or manufacturing bottlenecks   
  • Act as design authority for all aspects of product mechanical design    
  • Conduct design review of all mechanical CAD stackups produced by vendors   
  • Lead materials and component research and selection
  • Identify resource needs to meet development timelines for mechanical projects.
  • Manage stakeholders (vendors, consultants, etc) in ME projects           
  • Build testing procedures for static and dynamic effects of the system under various environmental conditions (FEA and experimental)           
  • Design, build and manage hardware reliability testing for mechanical system and subsystems   
  • Design and implementation of any Hammerhead-specific hardware jigs for manufacturing assembly and testing
  • Design and execution of reliability test procedures for ensuring the life-cycle of all products
  • Conduct reviews of tooling strategy, tolerances, DFM, DFMA, DFMEA, FEA
  • Set up, manage and maintain CAD and PLM systems and best practices
  • Maintain BOM updates for mechanical parts and engineer solutions to meet BOM targets 
  • Review manufacturing samples of HW components
  • Responsible for root cause analysis of any ME-related issue   

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • 5+ years experience building hardware products and working on hardware teams
  • Experience developing consumer electronics, ideally for an outdoor market
  • Experience in Prototyping, EVT, DVT, and Mass production phases of product development
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related experience, MS preferred. Materials science and plastics engineering experience a plus. 
  • Experience working with startups and new products
  • Fluency in Solidworks including surface modeling and managing large assemblies. Experience with other CAD tools a plus
  • Experience with FEA simulations tools
  • Experience managing CAD and PLM systems essential
  • Experience managing configuration control and change management
  • Experience interfacing with outside design contractors
  • Exemplary written and verbal communications skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced startup environment
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States 

Nice to Haves: 

  • Fluency in Mandarin 
  • Matlab and ANSYS for analysis 
  • Experience with IPX products that require design to prevent ingress 
  • Plastics stress, fatigue and design for manufacturing experience 
  • Experience with consumer electronics device design including those with capacitive touchscreens, buttons, antennas and IPX

Location & Travel

  • New York City, primary place of work
  • Regular visits to China Contract Manufacturers 
  • Ability to travel internationally often (up to 15% per year), including travel to manufacturing facilities in China, Taiwan, and elsewhere
