About the Role:

As part of the Technical Solutions team, you will be responsible for end-to-end technical success of a Partner building embedded payroll. You will work closely with our internal Engineering, Product, and Business teams to support our Partners throughout their lifecycle. We operate like a startup—candidates who prefer a rapid pace of change and a nascent, fast moving market landscape will feel at home.

About the Team:

Gusto Embedded Payroll is an API based product that enables software developers to embed and customize payroll directly into their software. And it works in any type of platform serving small and medium businesses: vertical SaaS, business operations, fintech, neobanks, and more. We’ve taken the infrastructure we’ve built servicing tens of millions of paychecks and tens of thousands of tax codes and made it available for software developers. Our vision is to enable any third party developer to build the best payroll product for their end customers.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Inspire our Partners by guiding them in designing and building with Gusto's API products. Demonstrate our solutions through pre-built apps, workflows, or directly using the API with tools like Postman.
  • Lead the technical success of our Partners by collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. Support the development and scaling of their payroll business, identifying and mitigating risks to development and timelines.
  • Drive our Partners product development as a key workstream, ensuring the creation of a successful and sustainable payroll business through effective collaboration and strategic support.
  • Diagnose Partner challenges and present recommendations in a consultative manner.
  • Understand, track and document product feedback and competitive intelligence from customers and advocate for the development internally by documenting and sharing with product management.
  • Be the first point of contact for any technical issues or questions related to the Embedded APIs and building/maintaining the payroll product. This includes leading product overviews about how the Embedded Platforms works, recommending features to build and how to build them, as well as leading the quality review of completed features to ensure they are customer ready.
  • Build the tool(s) and systems to scale the Technical Solutions function. This is a relatively new team and you will have direct responsibility in building the foundation for the team and driving its success.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or 1+ years of engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in a role focused on driving the success of external customers.
  • Demonstrated success dealing with ambiguity in a high-growth environment - capable of prioritizing complex workloads and demanding stakeholders.
  • A structured thinker with exceptional communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, confident explaining complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, from individual contributors to C-level executives.
  • Problem solver with strong product sense who has experience investigating, triaging, and resolving complex technical issues with cross-functional teams.
  • Scrappy, entrepreneurial, builder mindset. You will be part of a newer team that is growing and iterating quickly. You will be doing everything from pitching Embedded Payroll platform capabilities to overseeing the product development of signed Partners, establishing new processes, rolling out new tooling or resources, and supporting technical questions/issues.
  • A team player who thrives on cross-functional collaboration to understand gaps and working together to improve systems and processes.

Strong Nice to haves:

  • Technically adept in APIs. You’re able to understand and explain how APIs can be used to simplify complex domain problems for other developers.
  • Technical program, or project management, experience including stakeholder, resource, and timeline management accountability.
  • Proven success in overseeing all elements of the product development lifecycle and/or technical project management with a track record of designing and implementing complex solutions for enterprise-level customers.
  • You've been a first or early hire at a fast-growing startup before.
  • Knowledge of payroll software and/or Vertical SaaS.
