Data Engineer I is perfect for someone with a passion for data and a desire to build and support Big Data systems that drive numerous business functions using near real-time data analytics solutions. The ideal candidate will work closely with various teams to design, implement, and maintain our data infrastructure, ensuring it supports key business decisions and operations.

Reporting to our Data Engineering Manager, this role works as part of a team of engineers in the technology division of our advertising business.

Note: GumGum fosters a flexible work environment, offering GumGummers the ability to work either in-office or remotely/from home. However, for occasional in-person collaboration, we kindly ask that this position be located within a 'commutable' distance to our office.

What You'll Achieve

  • Design, implement, and support ETL pipelines using Snowflake, AirFlow, Looker, Kafka, and Spark.
  • Handle petabyte-scale data ingestion with Spark/Snowpipe.
  • Design partitioning and clustering strategies for efficient OLAP operations on large Snowflake tables.
  • Collaborate with product teams to translate business requirements into data pipelines.
  • Own and scale core data pipelines, providing support and bug fixes.
  • Participate in technical discussions, code reviews, and follow best practices.
  • Generate reports using SQL, Python, Spark, and LookML.
  • Work on PoCs to test emerging technologies.
  • Enhance and build reports in Looker as needed.
  • Continue skill development under mentorship.

Skills You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or equivalent.
  • 1+ years of software engineering experience (Java/Scala/Python).
  • Experience with large-scale distributed data systems (AWS, Spark, Kafka, Snowflake, BigQuery).
  • Minimum 2 years of overall experience.
  • Strong understanding of SQL databases.
  • Familiarity with AWS services, serverless architecture, and containers.
  • Ability to orchestrate data processing systems (Airflow).
  • Quality code writing and building secure, highly available systems.
  • Experience with dataframes (Pandas, Dask, Spark).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts effectively.
  • Self-starter with initiative, collaborative, and eager to adopt new technologies.
  • We embrace a flexible work environment! For this role, you'll have the opportunity to work both remotely and from our Santa Monica office. We ask that you're able to join us in the office 2-3 times per week to collaborate with your team and enjoy the in-person vibe.

What We Offer

At GumGum, competitive base pay is a part of a total rewards package which also includes benefits, an emphasis on recognition, development, and wellness. The reasonable estimated base pay range for this role is from ($119,000 $137,000) annually.  The actual amount may be higher or lower. Individual compensation will vary based on factors including, but not limited to, relevant qualifications, work location, and labor market conditions.

The total rewards package offered also includes an employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan, and depending on the role, participation in a bonus, commission, or stock incentive program.
