Remote placement at Amber Charter Schools

We are seeking team-oriented, student-centered, service-minded individuals who share the belief that all students deserve a high-quality education.  Great Oaks Foundation Americorps Fellows gain valuable professional and personal experience and acquire skills in civic-engagement, teamwork and leadership during the service term.

Position Summary

Great Oaks Foundation (GOF) Americorps Fellows will be selected to provide high dosage academic tutoring and supportive mentorship to students in their assigned 3rd, 4th or 5th grade class every day. Fellows  will also collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including colleagues and families, to contribute to an enriching school community where students thrive. Fellows will serve students who are learning remotely from December to June. Through the month of December, all students will remain in 100% remote learning; students may opt-in to hybrid learning from January to June.  Fellows will serve remotely Mondays-Fridays, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, December 7, 2020 - June 30, 2021.

  • This is a half-time (900 hours) AmeriCorps Fellows service position. 
  • 2020-21 GOF Americorps Fellow positions are 100% remote.  Fellows receive  a living allowance and  have access to limited health insurance.  
  • Fellows will also be eligible for a Segal Education Award upon successful completion of the service term in good-standing with the service site (900 hours of service and completion of the service term in its entirety).
  • Fellows receive high-quality professional development throughout the service year. 

The mission of the Great Oaks Foundation (GOF) is to launch and support a network of charter schools that prepare students for college success through a rigorous tutorial program. The Great Oaks Foundation has replicated the Great Oaks Fellowship model in Newark, NJ, New York, NY, Bridgeport, CT, Wilmington, DE and Baltimore, MD. A select group of Great Oaks Fellows are enrolled in the Teaching Residency program.  

Amber Charter Schools (ACS) mission is to provide our students an academically rigorous and well-rounded education, along with strong character development, enabling them to prosper in their future endeavors.

Amber Charter School East Harlem was founded in 2000 as the first Latino-led charter school in New York State. It currently serves 500 K-5 students. Amber Charter School Kingsbridge opened in 2016 and serves 440 K-5 students.  Amber Charter School Inwood will open in 2021 and serve K-8 students. By 2025, the ACS network will serve almost 2000 students across three NYC neighborhoods.

The Great Oaks Foundation has partnered with Amber Charter Schools to provide more placement opportunities for GOF Americorps Fellows to serve students in need of support through high dose tutoring and mentoring.  This is a critical need, given the evolving challenges our schools and students face in the midst of our country’s ongoing health pandemic.  GOF Fellows will support 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who attend our East Harlem (Manhattan) and Kingbridge (Bronx) schools.

Position Responsibilities

Instruct for Mastery

GOF Fellows deliver virtual small group academic instruction to students in the context of a supportive relationship, resulting in a significant increase in math and ELA achievement. 

  • Provide high dosage, high impact tutoring and academic learning support to students in math and/or English language arts. 
  • Assess student learning daily to inform personalized instruction efforts.
  • Actively participate in synchronous remote learning sessions, to support student learning and engagement.
  • Provide additional academic support and guidance during office hours, after school programming and additional enrichment opportunities, as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings with teachers and leaders to receive guidance, academic data and materials to inform, align and evolve instructional practice.
  • Actively engage in professional development sessions that are focused on student instruction (tutorial), mentoring and coaching techniques, student data, personal development, diversity,inclusion and other relevant competencies.
  • Utilize at least one planning period each day to organize and adapt instructional materials.

Mentor for Leadership

GOF Fellows provide fundamental support to enhance students’ social emotional growth. 

Fellows help empower students to evolve into leaders.

  • Mentor small groups and individual students.
  • Consistently serve as a model for students, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to learning as well as professional behavior.
  • Ensure students’ continued demonstration of AMBER core values (Achievement, ComMunity, ResponsBility, HonEsty and Respect) and community member expectations.
  • Support students to set self-directed social emotional goals.
  • Cultivate relationships with families through weekly communication, ensuring open conversations and productive partnership that support student progress.

Develop a  Community

Fellows will contribute to the enrichment and development of the school community. 

  • Attend and actively participate in all virtual events and activities.
  • Help students and families grow their technology skills and troubleshoot challenges.
  • Support and assist specials teachers with daily lessons, activities and/or assessments.
  • Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. 
  • Additional responsibilities may be established by school leadership in collaboration with network leadership.


  • Completed a Bachelor’s degree by November 1, 2020
  • Citizenship or legal Permanent Residency status in the United States (AmeriCorps requirement)
  • Served no more than three previous AmeriCorps service terms (AmeriCorps National requirement)
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children (tutoring and/ or mentoring preferred) 
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

In particular, since this role is remote, candidates will also need: 

  • A high degree of comfort in learning and using digital tools and technology, including video conference and learning management platforms (e.g. Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.)
  • Reliable and secure equipment (laptop, internet access).

Candidates are not required to live in the NYC metropolitan area, but this is preferred.
