Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is seeking a part-time School Custodian with potential to move to full-time.



The Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is a high-performing, innovative charter public school in Newark NJ, serving students from Pre-K to 12th grade on campuses across the city. Our mission is to prepare public school students for success in college. Great Oaks Legacy students aspire to be some of the highest performing students in the country.

We have high academic and behavioral expectations for our students. Our students, for example, are encouraged to take multiple AP classes before they graduate. We pair rigorous curriculum and teaching with intense personal support from teachers, tutors, and staff. Job Description

School Custodian Role Description:

The School Custodian is responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic quality of the entire school facility,including all internal spaces and the school grounds and exterior. This is achieved through a combination of completing tasks as outlined below and requested by leadership

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Cleans floors of classrooms, offices, special rooms, corridors, stairs, entrances, lobbies and cafeteria, as assigned.
    2. Removes debris on sidewalks leading to building, or as assigned.
    3. Sweeps, dry mops, wet mops, vacuums, shampoos, strips, seals, and waxes floors, as assigned.
    4. Cleans and disinfects daily the drinking fountains, bathroom floors, bowls, seats, and urinals in restrooms, as assigned.
    5. Fills paper and soap dispensers in assigned areas, as needed.
    6. Cleans univents and filters as needed and in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures.
    7. Oils and services all motors and mechanical equipment in areas assigned in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures.
    8. Performs preventative maintenance in accordance with established district procedures.
    9. Opens classroom doors and entrance doors prior to the start of the school day or closes doors and windows and secures lights prior to leaving post daily in accordance with established schedule.
    10. Moves furniture and equipment within the building as directed by the principal or head custodian.
    11. Stores supplies and delivers supplies to teachers as directed.
    12. Cleans glass of lobby and entrance doors as required.
    13. Sets up, breaks down, and cleans the cafeteria/all ­purpose room as scheduled.
    14. Shovels, plows and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as directed.
    15. Remains on the school premises during work hours and unless otherwise authorized.
    16. Obeys all fire and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.
    17. Removes trash and other materials from school grounds in accordance with established schedule.



The School Custodian reports directly to the School Operations Manager.



  1. Strongly prefer candidates with Black Seal Certification for Low Pressure Boilers.
  2. Has 3+ years’ previous experience as a building custodian.
  3. Is in good health and able to meet the demands of the position including, but not limited to being able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
  4. Successfully completes required criminal history proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and/or acceptable.




Our students arrive, on average, significantly behind grade level. Many live in poverty – a higher percentage than most schools in the country. Upon arrival, they are statistically less than 10% likely to graduate with a 4-year degree. Our mission is that each child ultimately graduates from college.
