About this Role
Our mission is to cool the world by transforming every home to be more comfortable and healthy for the people who inhabit it - without compromising the environment. We are looking for a Thermal Controls Engineer to be the architect for the control algorithms that run our heat pumps, taking advantage of our state-of-the-art thermal system design to deliver an unparalleled user experience.
Define control architecture for Gradient's thermal system to deliver cooling and heating with peak efficiency and a frictionless user experience across a wide range of conditions
Create and own control code tool chain and repository
Test and validate algorithms on prototype hardware in the lab and in the field
Interface with the software team to incorporate and continuously improve control algorithms in the system firmware
Select thermal sensors and actuators to be included in the product, while balancing performance, costs, and availability
BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical field, with coursework focusing on controls
3+ years experience developing automated electromechanical systems (can include time spent towards MS or PhD degrees)
Strong background in the fundamentals of automatic control (PID, state-space based control, etc.)
Exceptional communication skills, in order to work cross-functionally between the thermal team and firmware team
Prior experience building DAQ-based control code test platforms via LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar
Experience programming C/C++ on embedded systems
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer
PhD degree in controls
Working knowledge of the fundamentals of thermodynamics/heat transfer
Experience implementing optimization techniques
Experience with stationary or mobile HVAC systems
