G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion and The A.V. Club, and reaches over 120 million unique visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans. We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.
About the Role:
The Takeout, a cultishly popular food site where we cover limited edition Oreos and the fried chicken sandwich wars with the same kind of breathless enthusiasm our colleagues at other foodie sites devote to a night at Carbone. Our purview is the hot damn delicious, no matter where it comes from.
This is a position for a quick-witted, strong-voiced Staff Writer who is excited to talk about food and restaurant culture. If you’re opinionated, unpretentious, and know your way around food, you'll fit in well with our team at The Takeout. This is an entry-level writing position, great for early-career writers who love food and want to get started in journalism.
Responsibilities:
- Headline, features, draft writing for prose and multimedia for all comedy verticals.
- Special projects by request — weekly special assignment (specific tasks vary every week).
- Meeting participation — attend all required timely headline meetings, issue picking, evergreen headlines, sports, and read-throughs.
- Evaluating contributor packets for selection of apprentices and fellows.
- Occasional edits of features or other content types at request of Managing Editor or EIC to showcase command of Onion voice and provide pathway for advancement.
- Additional duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Have some experience in writing, whether that means a personal food blog or articles published in larger online publications;
- Be capable of turning around stories ranging from news stories to recipe development, cookbook reviews, and taste tests;
- Be comfortable asserting your opinion and substantiating why your advice is sound;
- Be comfortable working across mediums, including video and podcasts;
- Be eager to brainstorm about how to expand The Takeout's food coverage, and to work in a fun, collaborative environment.
To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter.
