About The Role
The A.V. Club, one of digital media’s most distinctive and respected entertainment brands, is looking for a Los Angeles-based Music Editor. The person in this position will oversee the site’s coverage of new singles, albums, videos, festivals and tours—with a particular focus on the groundbreaking artists who shape pop culture.
The Music Editor will be expected to develop smart, timely and in-depth features tied to a range of genres and sounds. They’ll focus on artists who move the needle, from Grammy-winning pop stars to up-and-coming indie sensations. The person in this role will expand The A.V. Club’s music coverage by tapping staff and freelance contributors for reviews as well as long- and short-form stories, interviews, and lists. They’ll also coordinate the site’s in-depth packages for seasonal coverage, major festivals, awards shows and other essential events.
The ideal candidate will be a strong writer and editor who possesses a clear and ambitious vision for The A.V. Club’s Music section. They’ll have a deep understanding of the site’s unique voice and its well-deserved reputation as a destination for music fans. They’ll also possess an uncanny knack for creating content that reaches both dedicated fans as well as casual listeners.
Core Responsibilities
- Write, assign and edit compelling stories
- Bring fans closer to their favorite artists and take them inside music’s biggest events.
- Strong advance planning for upcoming releases, festivals and packages.
- Provide smart ideas for features, interviews, special reports and seasonal offerings.
- Oversee a diverse stable of freelance writers and critics and provide mentoring and coaching as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with record labels, event promoters, streaming companies and publicists, without sacrificing A.V. Club standards.
- Represent The A.V. Club on camera and at events, including moderating panels or other public speaking.
Qualifications
- At least three years of experience in entertainment journalism
- An exceptional critical voice
- Strong organizational skills
- Capable of planning and turning around stories ranging from short news pieces to longer features at a quick pace
- A clear understanding of journalistic ethics as they relate to cultural criticism and The A.V. Club
- A commitment to diversity
