G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion and The A.V. Club, and reaches over 120 million unique visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans. We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.
Kotaku is looking for a hungry writer who loves telling stories about people. You have some nerve, and are bold enough to turn heads on any given topic. You have zero tolerance for buzzwords and know how to cut through the hype. You play video games, but you also have a wide range of interests and a good understanding of broader pop culture.
You are well-versed in platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Discord, and Twitch, and have some understanding of modern fandom. You are the sort of person who always knows about the latest hot influencer or viral game, and if you don’t, you should have the drive and curiosity to find out. On your best days, you’re not just following trends—you’re leading the conversation.
When something happens, you aren’t content with merely re-sharing it on social media: You want to talk to the people involved and get to the bottom of it. While we expect some familiarity with major video game franchises and figures, you’re also ready to pave your own lane. You understand that the best ideas come from unlikely places, and feel a need to experiment and have fun on the page. For you, every day on the internet is an adventure that you want to share with other people.
Kotaku is looking for folks who don't necessarily fit the mold of what the gaming press "should" cover or care about. We are open to diverse candidates with a variety of backgrounds who may not look or sound like the average games journalist. Some reporting experience is preferred, but we will consider candidates who are strong in journalism, criticism, or both. While our central offices are located in New York, we will also consider candidates who can commute to G/O offices in LA and Chicago.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Can spot, source, and develop stories ranging from blogs, features, and news reports on a daily basis
- Can juggle concurrent articles or projects with varying lead times
- Have strong time management skills to meet pressing deadlines
- Care about writing as a craft, and can take edits like a champ
- Are eager to brainstorm ways to expand our coverage
- Are comfortable with digital publishing platforms, online organization tools, and minor image editing. Video experience is a plus, but not required.
- Are invested in helping Kotaku develop a different type of video game site (and want to help us define what that means)
G/O Media is deeply committed to fostering a transparently inclusive workplace environment and people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans and LGBTQ candidates are very strongly encouraged to apply. Our company-wide mission is to reach very diverse audiences and so, we are deeply committed to having teams and leaders that reflect this mission.
