About the Role:
The Onion is seeking a Chicago-based Staff Writer to join their editorial team. Staff writers for The Onion are fully dedicated to writing Onion content and being the main driving force behind producing written content across all verticals including but not limited to The Onion, Onion Sports, Onion Gamers Network, editorial video, features, and any special projects (books, live events, etc.).
The Staff Writer will be working on any new initiatives from The Onion, in addition to regular Onion Staff Writer duties.
Headline, features, draft writing for prose and multimedia for all comedy verticals
Idea and script generation for The Onion’s daily news podcast
Special projects by request
Evaluating contributor headlines
Occasional edits of features or other content types
Additional duties as assigned
Completion of Onion writing packet (details below)
Mastery of Onion voice and comedic sensibility
Strong headline, draft, feature, and video script writing skills
Aptitude for thoughtfully satirizing cultural zeitgeist and society at large
Identifying weakness in others' written pieces and giving tactful notes to help them improve
Participation in group-oriented idea generation
Capability to work on and meet tight deadlines
Understanding of Onion editorial process
Onion Writing Packet:
All applicants must complete a sample writing packet. It must contain:
15 Onion-style headlines
A comedic writing sample (published work preferred, but not required)
Packets should be attached with the headlines and writing sample in one PDF
