At GoCardless we’re looking to scale from processing £10 billion a year to over £20 billion. Our vision is to create a global connected payments network, making payments simpler on the internet no matter what country you're in or what software you are using.
Tens of thousands of businesses across the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada US and New Zealand rely on us to handle their recurring payments, and hundreds more sign up every week. As we look to the future, those businesses will be larger, more demanding, and present in multiple countries - and so will we.
We’ve built a friendly, collaborative culture where we hire and develop ambitious people that share our desire to produce work we can be proud of. We value learning and feedback, and there will be significant scope for you to develop and expand your role as our team continues its rapid growth.
About the team
The Payment Operations team is crucial to GoCardless’ global payment processing. We are responsible for ensuring GoCardless’ customers are correctly paid on time, every time, anywhere in the world. Working alongside our Engineering and Product Management teams, we are building a world class global payment operation and need your help to get there.
About the role
We’re looking for a highly motivated, dedicated professional to lead our improvement and expansion programmes. Your primary goals will include improving and measuring operating efficiency, KPI/KRI reporting and supplier management. Additionally you will have the opportunity to work closely with the Head of Payment Operations and the VP of Banking Ops to design and build the payments operating model of the future. This is a varied and exciting role for those that have a good knowledge of payment operations and have the know-how to help us build a world class payments operation.
Payments is a core part of GoCardless. We make sure money gets from A to B, on time, everytime. As we accelerate our growth we want to ensure we maintain our high standard of delivery. We are moving fast, so it’s vital that you can develop solutions to help us maintain the pace.
Doing things the right way is very important to us. Investigating unreconciled payments is crucial in making sure that our customers have received their funds correctly, that we can account for every penny and that the money is in the right bank account. We are investing in technology to optimise operational efficiency. To be successful in this role you must have a passion for automating operations processes and be comfortable implementing and leveraging systems to reach our goals. To be successful you must be committed to becoming the recognised expert in our operational funds flow. Equally important, you must be willing to learn or already understand CASS or PSR2017 rules on Safeguarding client funds.
We are a progressive company, not satisfied with solving the same problem multiple times. In this role you will be expected to create and implement future proof solutions where possible.
Based in our London office, you will interact with a number of different function leaders across the company, such as Product Managers, Customer Support, Risk, Compliance and Engineering to facilitate improvements and scaling of our existing processes and safe, efficient expansion into new markets. You will also speak with external parties, such as banks and suppliers, so being able to communicate confidently in a clear and concise manner is imperative. As part of the London team you will work closely with colleagues throughout our network to build and enhance our operations capability. A broad interest in or knowledge of a regionally diverse range of payment schemes, changing landscape and the technology required to deliver a world class service will give you a distinct advantage over other candidates.
What we're looking for

- You must have experience of working with Product Managers and Engineers
- You understand the importance of appropriate controls and have knowledge of the regulatory requirements
- You have a genuine interest in the payments industry and want to learn more

- You have strong analytical skills and are a confident user of Google desktop including Google Sheets
Life at GoCardless
Diversity is hugely important to us and we welcome applications from those with disabilities and from under-represented backgrounds. Throughout our hiring and onboarding process we make any reasonable adjustments necessary to create a level playing field and continually look at how we can improve in this area. We also have active ‘employee resource groups’ (such a BEAM and Rainbow) that are supported and sponsored by members of our Exec team; they work to engage and inspire our employees on diversity & inclusion topics throughout the year.
We offer flexible working hours and remote working arrangements, enhanced parental leave and pension packages. You’ll also receive equity, because we believe having this ‘buy in’ is a vital part of building a successful business where everybody - regardless of their role - can make a valuable contribution.
Here at GoCardless we value flexibility, and throughout the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic we've listened to our global GeeCees to gain a better understanding of the positives and negatives of working remotely (which we've been doing since March 2020).
Their feedback helped us develop our 'Adaptive Working' model, rolling out mid to late 2021. It's built around three components: days in the office, remote working, and enhanced environments. This means teams will be able to come into a GC office between one and three days per week for collaboration and teamwork, with the rest spent working remotely to enable a healthy work/life balance. We’ll also be reimagining our office environments so they enhance the collaboration and socialisation aspects our GeeCees told us they value most highly.
We continually review this approach in conjunction with the changing restrictions in each of our locations; additionally we offer support to maintain wellbeing and comfort, including subsidised home office equipment, workstation assessments and a range of remote social activities you can dip in and out of whenever you fancy.
