GoCardless is growing fast. We’ve built a world-class product that opens up Direct Debit to small and medium-sized businesses across the UK and beyond, and we have recently extended our offering to multinational companies like the Guardian, TripAdvisor and Box. Thousands of businesses in the UK already rely on us to handle their payments, and hundreds more join us every week. About a third of these never previously had access to Direct Debit, so we are transforming the way they do business.


We’re looking for an exceptional VP of Product Management to help GoCardless scale and lead our product management function function. This hire is a crucial appointment  but also an amazing opportunity for an ambitious product leader looking to be part of a special growth story.


Working with other functions in engineering, data, design and security and the wider product development group.


The Role


Our PM team is focused on maximising the impact of our product development. We believe highly collaborative relationships are the key to building great products: PMs work in cross-functional development teams with engineers, designers and data scientists and are involved throughout the software development lifecycle, but bias their time towards figuring out what we should work on to deliver the most impact.


The nature of PM here makes this a broad role with a wide sphere of influence across the company and far more influence than authority. Ultimately this isn’t a role for someone expecting a highly defined list of duties; we expect this person to do whatever is best to deliver impact. However to give a sense of the key duties, these clearly do include:


Running the Product Management organisation


  • Line management responsibility for all of Product Management globally at GC

  • Growing the PM team at GoCardless and continuing its development into a truly world-class Product Management function, driving continuous improvement in how we work

  • This includes talent attraction, development, retention and wellbeing for all Product Managers, as well as direct line management of Managers of Product Managers (“Group Product Managers”)


Setting direction & ensuring alignment


  • We believe in being highly aligned on strategy, but distributing decision-making and autonomy to our development teams. The PM leader drives the evolution of our product strategy with our leadership team, and works with the PMs in our Groups to shape the direction for each of them - what they don’t do is dictate what gets on the teams’ roadmaps


Driving delivery & impact


  • Ultimately we expect product development teams to drive improvements in our company-wide KPIs and our strategic position. This person should be consistently removing delivery blockers that get in the way, as well as ensuring that PMs can measure and demonstrate the impact they deliver

This role would suit someone with senior management experience focussed on strategy and people management responsibility with a passion for Product Management.
