The role of Software Engineer:
Career track and level: Individual Contributor Level 3
As a Software Engineer at Glean, you'll be part of a multi-disciplinary, talented team, collaborating to create innovative software solutions that empower our users. You'll be responsible for crafting clean, efficient, and maintainable code, integrating components, and ensuring the quality and reliability of our products. You’ll also pride yourself on following our Engineering Principles.
Meet the team:
Technology at Glean is a cross-functional function made of Engineering, Product, Product Marketing, User Experience, Customer Experience and Data. This filters down to our product squads where we have at least one team member from each discipline working together to build the best product for our users and customers.
You’ll be joining one of four stream-aligned squads; Buyer Admin & Distribute (known internally as BEAR), Note-taking (known internally as GOAT), Learning (known internally as Egg) or Buyer HE solution.
You’ll be managed by one of the Engineering Line Managers; Natasha (owner of dog Bailey), Bruce (a man with a large vocabulary), Charlene (starting with us in January 2025, and owner of dog Spud), or Mark (Nomad policy champion, Glean Pride organiser) who are either Engineering Managers, Software Engineers or Platform Engineers themselves.

What you’ll be doing:
🧑💻 Develop and Deliver: Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code. Test, and deploy software releases. Integrate software components and third-party programs.
🏅 Culture of quality: Maintain a focus of quality and testability of delivered solutions alongside creating technical documentation.
💡 Problem-Solve and Innovate: Troubleshoot issues, identify improvement opportunities, and implement technical solutions. Learn about our hack week here.
🤝 Collaborate and Learn: Work closely with cross-functional teams, share knowledge, and continuously develop your skills. You can find out more about the recent Engineering away day here.
🧭 Mentor and Lead: Guide and support junior engineers, fostering a positive and collaborative team culture.

About you:
- Strong programming skills (object oriented and/ or functional).
- Front end technologies HTML5, CSS and JavaScript frameworks (we mainly use TypeScript and React).
- Back end technologies (we use Kotlin)
- Mobile technologies (we use Flutter).
- Persistence (mainly SQL, specifically PostgreSQL), some NoSQL.
- Knowledge of best practices in automated testing, continuous integration, automated deployment, code quality etc.
- Strong communication skills, with "passionate views, loosely held" – articulate ideas clearly but remain open to other perspectives.
- Willingness to learn, develop new skills, and adopt a flexible, team-oriented mindset.
Not every one of the above is essential, but hopefully it gives an idea of what we find useful day to day.
💰Salary and benefits:
£46,000 - £51,000 dependent upon experience

Location:
We have a beautiful office space in Leeds and we love it when we get together to collaborate in person. We typically operate a hybrid way of working, however some of our roles support remote working within the UK, if you live more than 50 miles from the office.

🎄 Applications over the Christmas period
Glean gift 3 days annual leave over the Christmas period which means we are closed between Christmas and the new year. We're taking this time to recharge and will review any applications received after Friday 20th December in the week following 2nd January. We wish you a restful and happy holiday season.
If we invite you to meet with us for interview, here’s an overview of what the process will look like:
- Screening interview with someone in our Recruitment team (30 minutes).
- Technical test via Github; you will have 1 week to complete the test when it suits you best. The test isn’t timed.
- Pairing exercise (1 hour) with two of our Engineers.
- Final stage interview which includes a 1 hour culture and values interview, plus a 30 minute interview around your CV and experience. This will be with our Head of Engineering and other members of the team.
Ahead of your interviews you will receive a confirmation email outlining who you’ll be meeting and when, anything you’ll need to prepare in advance and any resources we think you might find helpful.
