GitHub is changing the way the world builds software, and we want you to help build GitHub! We are looking for a Director with previous hands-on product or engineering experience to lead a group of engineers on the Special Projects team.

On this team, we work on a wide variety of customer-facing projects with a high degree of autonomy and at a high tempo. In the past several months, we've worked on projects to remove customer friction points across, improve the experience of Enterprise customers by partnering with teams across GitHub, and on various special projects, to highlight the power of open-source around the work, like the Mars 2020 Helicopter Mission badge in partnership with NASA.

The Special Projects team is distributed across the US, Canada, and Europe, and we are looking for a leader for this unique team who thrives in a culture of asynchronous communication, and who ideally has experience managing remote teams. In this role, every initiative we take has a direct customer impact, so you will be collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders across the company. You will help grow the team through hiring key people, building a diverse and inclusive team, and fostering a high-performance culture. We care deeply about an environment where team members are enabled to do their best work and continuously learn and grow.

A Day in the Life

Our team is distributed and works asynchronously much of the time. We meet as a group once a week and provide plenty of focused time to dive into work. We utilize Slack and Zoom to collaborate and communicate. In a given week you will:

  • Investigate, understand and prioritize customer friction that can come from support tickets, Twitter, other GitHub employees - especially the Sales team, and any other countless locations; you will then translate the customer pain points into potential work for the Special Projects team.
  • Provide feedback, guidance, and pragmatic solutions to the engineers and designers working on tasks.
  • For one-off special projects, you will build a plan while working cross-functionally across the company to deliver the project on time, at a high quality, and while supporting your peers within Special Projects for shared success.
  • Demo the team's work to company executives and stakeholders.
  • Identify potential opportunities within GitHub for the team to make an outsized impact on the GitHub product.

  • Set your team up for success. Source, hire and build a diverse, high-performance engineering team that ships frequently. Motivate them and generate positive energy to enable them to do their best work
  • Collaborate within your team. Meet with team members on a regular basis and provide regular feedback and direction to ensure that they are learning, growing, and advancing their career. At any given time, you will need to provide your guidance, drive clarity, foster clear communication, and process improvements.
  • Cultivate a positive environment. Demonstrate a strong sense of ownership and belonging across the organization where team members are empowered.
  • Deliver success and make things happen. Lead successful projects with clear customer-facing impact, ensuring high quality and timely delivery of features, and looking to exceed expectations when opportunities arise.
  • Provide technical leadership. Ensure the team builds software that is architecturally consistent, of high quality, and that follows operational best practices.
  • Collaborate and build trust across teams. Your success will require coordination across multiple teams and domains at GitHub to prioritize work and enable successful delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of engineering or product management equivalent experience with demonstrated ability to discover opportunities and define and deliver products
  • Experience managing either product teams, engineering teams, or both
  • Experience with hiring and building a diverse, high-performance team
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and planning both at an individual and team level.
  • Experience working across organizations with Sales, Marketing, Support, Product, Engineering, and Design and leading via influence
  • Experience working in a startup environment where you feel comfortable making decisions efficiently and communicating them effectively
  • Strong communication skills, with clear verbal communication as well as explicit and mindful written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing a team of people managers
  • Entrepreneurial thinking and the ability to act effectively with only high-level direction
  • Track record of working in complex and high impact services at scale and/or distributed systems
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and cross-functional projects across a wide product area
  • Experience working in a startup environment where you feel comfortable making decisions efficiently and communicating them effectively
