GitHub is changing the way the world builds software and we want you to help change the way we build GitHub. We're looking for an experienced software engineering manager to work with a dynamic and distributed group of engineers crafting and scaling our application.

The engineers on GitHub's Ruby Architecture team are responsible for designing solutions and refinements to help with scale, cost, decomposition, security, and growth of our applications and services. We also collaborate directly with other engineering teams to facilitate, build, and ship improvements to GitHub as well as Rails and Ruby. Our highest priority is that the reliability of GitHub and our services are noticeably better through the work, advice, and support we provide.

The team is highly distributed. You should thrive in an environment of asynchronous communication and have experience setting expectations and helping engineers thrive in a remote setting. A successful engineering manager should have strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to build working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe. As the engineering manager on the Ruby Architecture team, you'll always be challenged to solve unique and interesting problems that have a real impact on how your co-workers, and GitHub users, build software.

Responsibilities include:

  • Setting expectations and guiding a team of talented engineers who are writing robust, and maintainable, backend Ruby code
  • Work across engineering teams to align goals, collaborate on expectations, and deliver solutions
  • Foster a collaborative and open culture
  • Ensure the team is building high quality solutions that are consistent with operational best practices
  • Coach and develop your team through mentoring, ongoing feedback, and engagement in their career development
  • Foster an environment that strives for clear communication, accessibility, and understanding
  • Staying up-to-date with the Ruby and Rails community to help support the team’s efforts

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years building web applications at scale
  • 5+ years Ruby and Rails experience
  • 3+ years of engineering people management experience
  • Experience as co-maintainer of an open-source project
  • Experience with Git and GitHub
  • Ability to empathize with a diverse range of engineers
  • Experience with hiring, building, and maintaining a high quality team
  • You can evaluate the trade-offs for building highly available distributed systems
  • Attention to detail, planning, and organization
  • Experience managing a distributed team
