GitHub is seeking an Employment Counsel to join its Legal Team to partner closely with our HR Team in support of our global workforce. Our impact and customers are global, and so is our vision, and we're looking for someone who will materially further it. Your role will be to support our HR Team and the company with state-of-the-art and bespoke employment practices that enhance GitHub's culture and business. At a minimum, this means keeping the company in compliance with both domestic and international employment law, drafting forward-thinking employment guidelines and policies, and taking a creative and entrepreneurial approach to traditional labor law issues.

Responsibilities:

Developing, implementing, and advising on employment handbooks, policies and procedures.
Drafting and negotiating employment and separation agreements.
Developing compliance programs in coordination with internal stakeholders and HR across multiple different jurisdictions.
Managing and helping to resolve complex employee relations issues.
Conducting effective, thorough and objective investigations as needed.
Making recommendations as to action needed, including recommendations on discipline, in connection with HR investigations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants should have at least 7 years of strong experience across the full spectrum of in-house HR and employment practice.
A lights-out academic background with at least 7 years of post-J.D. experience, with an overwhelming preference for someone who has previously supported or helped build out HR within a technology startup or software company.
A wonkish and even freakish facility with employment law (both US and international), specifically, and internet law, more generally, is assumed. An innovative flare and charming bedside manner are necessary.
Demonstrated success in problem solving and the ability to be agile through change.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative, transparent, fast-paced, and distributed workplace.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to coherently and strategically present information, findings and recommendations in a clear manner.
Demonstrated program ownership and consistent delivery on commitments - great organizational skills with exceptional follow through and attention to detail.
Flexibility to work extended hours when necessary to connect with colleagues in EMEA and APAC.
Active membership and good standing in your state bar.

Preferred Qualifications:

Employment litigation experience.
Previous in-house experience with working at a technical organizations with a distributed, global employee population.
Basic technical coding experience (HTML or Markdown, for instance) is a major plus.
