About the role

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented HR Generalist in our Fleet Operations organization with experience in a transportation environment to manage HR operations across our North American locations. This individual will be a key player in partnering with Fleet Operations leadership in HR programs and policies while administering day-to-day execution of tasks associated with payroll, HRIS, and compliance. As we prepare to scale significantly in our Fleet Organization, the HR Generalist will actively support onboarding fleet and operations talent, including truck drivers, mechanics and supervisory staff, either directly or in partnership with our Talent Acquisition team. 

The HR Generalist will champion a positive employee experience throughout the Fleet Operations area and ensure compliance with DOT & FMCSA driver-related regulations. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in payroll, benefits administration, HR process management, employee relations, onboarding, policy administration and compliance for a largely non-exempt work force. The role will also ensure adherence to federal - both US and Canada - regulations for commercial motor carriers.  The position will be responsible for HR excellence across our Operations units in the US and Canada.

This role is onsite five days per week in our Mountain View office.

What you'll do

  • HR Operations & Administration: Manage day-to-day HR programs and processes for the Fleet Operations organization including payroll, benefits administration, employee data management, and policy communication and compliance. Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations across our North American locations.
  • Non-Exempt Employee Management: Lead day-to-day HR processes for non-exempt workforce in Fleet Operations organization and execute centralized HR programs with a focus on operational excellence, and regulatory compliance; Support fleet managers and supervisors in effective people practices including onboarding, management, offboarding and other key components of the employee experience.
  • Driver Compliance: Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA and Canadian CMV carrier compliance requirements and standards, including ongoing compliance with driver qualification files and DOT drug testing protocols; Keep the Human Resources, Fleet Management and Safety team informed of outstanding Driver violations, as well as expiring licenses and DOT medical certificates. (For both US & Canada)
  • Employee Relations: Cultivate a positive and inclusive work environment. Proactively address employee concerns, investigate issues, and provide guidance and coaching to both employees and managers on various HR-related matters.
  • Legal and Regulatory: Identify legal, compliance, and regulatory requirements affecting Human Resources (i.e. EEO, Wage & Hour, FMLA, HOS, etc.) that are applicable to the Fleet Operations organization; Develop the Fleet Operations employment policies & handbooks and administer the policies & related processes to ensure proper compliance.
  • Administer PTO and Leave Policies: Effectively manage and track employee paid time off (PTO) and leave plans for all Fleet Operations team members, ensuring compliance with company policies and relevant regulations. Provide guidance to employees on various leave options.
  • Culture Champion: Embody and uphold the company’s core values. Foster an environment of collaboration, engagement, productivity, and technical excellence. 
  • Onboarding & Talent Development: Partner closely with leadership to develop and implement effective onboarding and employee development programs for the Fleet Operations organization. Ensure all new employees, drivers and dispatchers are effectively onboarded and trained.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience working in an HR role, preferably at a startup or other fast-paced environment
  • Experience working at a rapidly growing start-up. Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
  • Experience in Transportation, Logistics or Operations industry (required)
  • Experience HR administration for non-exempt workforce
  • Strong working knowledge and generalist experience in all human resources operational areas including, onboarding, employee relations, compliance, performance management, training & development, compensation, and benefits
  • Proven ability to work effectively with a wide-range of stakeholders, and to develop pragmatic solutions to people-related topics
  • Working knowledge of compensation and benefits design and administration, HRIS platforms and payroll administration systems
  • A track record of personal accountability, strong work ethic, integrity, and proven organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to take initiative and build strong, productive relationships
