We are out of time. Change must be immediate. We have to help the world find alternative ways to produce all the same things we love. But better. Using less land, less water, less energy, and making less waste. If you think that sounds like a mission, well, you are right. We are solving the world’s most important problems with talented individuals who share our passion to change the world. GALY is an early-stage company developing novel in vitro plant cell culture methods to produce cotton, coffee, and other plant products in a process that is faster and uses fewer resources than if grown in the ground. GALY's environment is built so everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, age, or background, can do their best work.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, supervised, elaborate and coordinated projects and engineering services for the installation of industrial bioreactors produced in stainless steel and other highly resistant materials;
  • Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems in Upstream and Downstream processes (considering particular filling and storage of the GALY process) of operational procedures in bioprocesses;
  • Control preventive and corrective maintenance plans with suppliers;
  • Align and ensure daily execution of approved internal procedures (POPs, IoTs, etc.) regarding Quality Control;
  • Develop and scale up heterotrophic plant cells, from the cell bank, through the seed train, to the end of the cell production phase in bioreactors for R&D and industrial production;
  • Define, adjust and optimize process parameters, such as aeration, agitation, and other physical and chemical parameters;
  • Work with suppliers to determine the best equipment to purchase for GALY's laboratories and use at contract sites;
  • Write reports and protocols and prepare batch records and technical transfer documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Bioprocess Engineering or other activity in Engineering provided that you have at least 3 years of experience in Bioprocesses (Upstream and Downstream).
  • Specializations in Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related areas will be considered differentials;
  • Experience with fermentation equipment and procedures from pilot scale required;
  • Experience with sterile operations and cleaning procedures required;
  • Experience with standard scale-up parameters (kLa, OTR, OUR, aeration, and agitation equipment configurations);
  • Experience with plant cell culture (highly desirable);
  • Experience with statistical methods and design of experiments (DoE) methods (highly desirable);
  • Knowledge of standard microscopy techniques, including staining and methods for determining contamination and cell viability;
  • Ability to travel to the GALY laboratory in the USA, suppliers, and collaborators outside the State of São Paulo;
  • Communicate efficiently in written, oral, and graphic forms;
  • Working in multidisciplinary teams;
  • Understand and apply professional ethics and responsibility;
  • Evaluate the impact of biotechnology in the social and environmental context;
  • Experience in the layout of a biofactory containing bioreactors;
  • Proven experience in monitoring the implementation of a biofactory project, mainly for industrial-scale production in bioreactors (1,000 liters or more in fermentation processes);
  • Desirable knowledge in AutoCAD (DWG);
  • Experience in the production flow of a biofactory;
  • Experience in internal maintenance of bioreactors and conducting these activities with third parties (preventive and corrective);
  • Desirable experience in the disciplines of Mechanics, Electrical, and Automation;
  • Experience in preparing technical and economic feasibility studies, such as CapEx and OpEx budgeting;
  • Experience with sterilization operations (CIP/ Clean-In-Place and SIP/ Sterilization-In-Place) and other sanitization procedures;

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by incumbents assigned to this job. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions, responsibilities, duties and skills required for the position, and GALY retains the discretion to modify functions, responsibilities, duties and skills at any time, including modifying the time devoted to such activities, deleting activities and assigning other activities.

Who we are:

GALY is growing the future. We are an army of dreamers that believe scientists are the artists of a new era. We envision a world where we can still produce sought-after materials without the physical burden we place on the planet and its people, especially those without opportunity. That is why we are revolutionizing the way we produce goods today by building a much more sustainable and distributable form of agriculture. However, nobody takes innovation seriously until you scale it. We are on it!  By developing novel scale-up strategies for in-vitro production of cotton that have never been done on an industrial scale, we will achieve something truly new. To do this, we are gathering a team with highly diverse skills and experiences, ranging from genetic engineering, plant cell culture, sterile process development, bioreactor design, mathematics, statistics agriculture, high-performance automation, stylists, illustrators, fashion designers, creative business development, marketing and branding strategies. A group on a mission to save our planet. We are scientists. We are artists. We are GALY.
