About location tech at Foursquare
As an important mission driver for Foursquare’s engineering and data science efforts, you’ll be responsible for directing an impactful and inclusive team of machine learning engineers, system engineers and data scientists in the expansion and improvement of our Visitation technologies, which focus on transforming multi-sensor measurements from mobile devices into meaningful data about the commercial activities of app users. This team sits at the hub between our B2B2C Pilgrim business and our enterprise B2B Media & Measurement business.
About the Placesnap team and this role
Foursquare's Placesnap team (named after the central snap-to-place technology), is responsible for business-critical R&D directions that generate differentiation both in the Pilgrim SDK and in the Media & Measurement business it drives, with a focus on attribution and commercial visit feeds. It is a key area of quantitative modeling at Foursquare. As a director, you will play an important role for the data science and engineering efforts necessary to unlock further differentiation, build scalable systems, and drive revenue via our enterprise business.
The Placesnap team consists of eight experienced members, including two frontline technical leads. This team is highly cross-functional, with all eight members having skills that combine traditional software engineering and a feel for data science. It is a highly-collaborative team, having interdependence with every product development team at Foursquare. The person in this role needs to be capable of orchestrating the execution of projects on a complex team, making business-savvy decisions based on R&D findings, and generating understanding within a diverse group of product managers, while leveraging skills as a quantitative researcher to set direction.
- Experience leading a research team with complex systems-building requirements
- Experience mentoring new leaders via coaching and compassion
- A technical understanding of quantitative modeling and building big-data systems, leveraging modern technologies like Spark and EMR
- Able to be a bridge between scientists and product owners, generating agreement and consensus
- Strong knowledge of Agile processes, including an understanding of how to balance short-term needs with long-term research payoffs
- Highly-effective communication skills (both written and verbal) including the ability to get buy-in from product managers and executives
- An understanding of the quality and reliability needs of an enterprise business
- Experience in areas related to geospatial tech preferred; or related areas of real-world measurement, e.g., healthcare tech
