👋 I’m Toby, Lead Product Designer at Formation. If you join our team, we’d get to work together every day.
My quick pitch for this role is that we’re a small, but mighty team of experienced product people from Facebook, Nextdoor, and Codecademy who care deeply about design. We are obsessed with building a world-class product and are backed by a16z, Designer Fund, Kapor Capital and senior leadership from Airtable, Notion, Rippling, Gusto and Airbnb.
What is Formation?
Formation is the better way to accelerate your career. We’re building a platform that combines adaptive learning technology with a mentorship network of industry experts to create personalized, online training programs for job seekers at scale.
Our first program is the Engineering Fellowship, a training program that helps software engineers from nontraditional and underrepresented backgrounds break into top-tier tech companies. Fellows are trained by current engineers from Facebook, Dropbox, etc. and are unconditionally supported by the entire Formation team until we succeed in landing their next role.
We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to work directly with our Lead Product Designer, Head of Fellow Experience, CEO, and CTO to create valuable, easy to use, and well-crafted tools to help our students learn and land their dream jobs.

- Is hungry to operate in an early stage environment that lacks bureaucracy
- Is a design generalist who loves doing end to end design work and can manage projects autonomously
- Is an education and social+ nerd who’s excited about how we can use technology to help people learn and land their dream jobs
Your perfect day will include:
- Leveraging the power of adaptive learning to directly impact learners from all backgrounds
- Designing features and experiences that increase the number of social learning interactions
- Conducting user research with students to drive product strategy
- Sketching out high level design approaches in your notebook or iPad
- Jumping into Figma to craft easy to use, beautiful features
- Working closely with our exceptional engineering team to ship at blazing speed (we often ship features end-to-end in a week!)
- Collecting feedback from students and using that to drive tomorrow's iteration
Skills and expertise that we value:
- 4+ years of product design experience
- Experience designing for social, education, and/or complex tools
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working in an early-stage environment
- Experience working across the product design stack and designing experiences end to end
- Experience conducting user research that meaningfully impacts product direction
- Experience creating beautiful, well-crafted interaction and visual design work
