The Position:

The Director/Senior Director, Search and Evaluation  will source, structure, negotiate and close different types of partnerships from discovery stage assets through commercialization. She/he is a leader with the ability to rapidly establish credibility, trust, and respect across the organization to operate as a true strategic thought partner across the business. She/he needs to be able to appropriately balance multiple priorities and work against tight timelines. Given the high visibility to Executive Leadership, this role presents excellent career advancement opportunities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead high-profile cross-functional teams and provide strong project management skills to ensure that key risks and opportunities are identified, captured, and presented in an unbiased way to senior management for decision-making.
  • Provide business development expertise and design partnering structures tailored to the profile of each envisioned collaboration.
  • Provide outstanding transaction skills through the entire deal-making process to secure and implement attractive deals.
  • Leverage and continuously strengthen broad academic, venture, and industry networks to identify, evaluate and recommend partnering opportunities based on scientific merit and strategic fit.
  • Proactively monitor the external business environment and maintain a knowledge base of licensing transactions and other company activities.
  • Lead term sheet and contract negotiations
  • Be an inclusive leader effectively managing and building a diverse and multicultural team
  • Lead with authenticity and a sense of urgency that inspires the team to communicate openly and thrive together.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years industry experience with at least 3+ years in Business Development, including lead role in deal execution
  • Advanced degree in a quantitative/scientific field (MBA, Masters or PhD) preferred
  • B.A. or B.S. degree (or equivalent) in life science or other relevant field

Skills:

  • Proven ability to source, structure, negotiate and close different types of partnerships from discovery stage assets through the commercialization stage.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and strategic corporate initiatives
  • Strong project management skills, ability to ensure effective/efficient decision-making and issue resolution competencies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to multitask and perform under pressure to meet challenging deadlines
  • Financial modeling and commercial forecast experience
  • Keen understanding of assets covered in deals/alliances
  • Understanding of complex deal structures requiring coordination with finance, legal, tax, R&D and commercial stakeholders
  • Established network of contacts in key academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, VC community
  • Ability to synthesize and present to senior executives, including Board, a complex set of facts (i.e. scientific, clinical, financial, and market information) to facilitate the decision-making process
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills
