Position Summary:

At Flagship Pioneering, the Procurement organization partners with our internal business functions to support our enterprise companies who drive innovation by increasing agility and speed to market, managing quality and compliance while mitigating risks and reducing costs. As a Category Lead (CL), you will play a meaningful role within Procurement to identify productivity opportunities through data analysis and insights while seeking Enterprise efficiencies with critical suppliers.

In collaboration with the business stakeholders, the CL will lead the development, implementation and maintenance of formalized Category Management best practices and implement effective Supplier Relationship Management; the objective of which is to ensure performance delivery, continuous improvement, and access to innovation from supplier relationships to achieve value contribution targets.

Through the application of rigorous Category Management tools, systems, and techniques, the CL will deliver measurable business value (operational and financial) in addition to taking ownership of supplier arrangements for their category and providing subject matter expertise to their stakeholders across the Flagship Enterprise.

This position will also be responsible for establishing, articulating, and implementing sourcing strategies for the Discovery and Pre-Clinical spend categories, obtaining program buy-in from relevant stakeholder and management. The incumbent shall create and manage the project plan, identify the resources to support projects, drive projects through a sourcing process and ensure end results meet the requirements of all FSP companies impacted. This position requires a proactive approach that is: relationship orientated, customer focused, and team orientated, analytical, creative, dynamic, and demonstrative of continuous improvement.


  • Consolidate supplier, market, category and internal business data and information, and develop and implement a cohesive, business-aligned long-term (1-3 year) Category Strategy at both the category and sub-category level. Categories include Scientific Services spanning across the Drug Discovery Units, Preclinical Translational Sciences, Toxicology, Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics, Chemistry, Biology, Gene Sequencing and more in both full service and FTE models. Additional categories include Goods and services for laboratory operations, lab consumables, and laboratory capital for research and pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Lead the bottom-up aggregation of all category data to inform the top-down target setting process, reconciling “gaps” between the bottom-up and top-down targets. This will require identifying a pipeline of category initiatives and opportunities (Savings / Productivity / Risk Management / Innovation) that will meet or exceed targets using external supply market / business intelligence, application of benchmarking methodologies and internal business partner knowledge.
  • Develop the Annual Category Plan (short to medium term outlook) based on the Category Strategy, business planning activities and category pipeline and oversee delivery for all areas within the category to meet or exceed annual targets, ensuring communication with the relevant stakeholders and key business partners.
  • Create and lead cross functional teams through the various stages of Category Management and ensure the resources, information and tools are in place for project execution throughout the category, providing expert support and guidance where required and ensure a best practice approach to operational buying.
  • Work with the Flagship Enterprise companies and required functions to deliver spend accuracy in the covered category area in line with agreed goals.
  • Ensure a thorough risk review is regularly undertaken and mitigated within the category scope of control.
  • Delivers successful cross-divisional sourcing projects that yield benefits to the Flagship Enterprise including savings, re-engineered business processes, sustainable long-term agreements and risk mitigating supply strategies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BA or M.Sc. Degree in Life Sciences.
  • 10+ years Pharma/Biotech industry experience including in-depth strategic procurement experience and extensive knowledge of R&D Pharmaceutical Industry category management.
  • Subject expertise for the Discovery and Pre-Clinical development (IND enabling) categories.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross functional project teams to generate material value across multiple complex categories.
  • Proactive approach that is flexible, relationship orientated, customer focused, and outcome orientated.
  • Strategic thinker with solid facilitation skills supported by excellent interpersonal competencies (Communication, leadership, influencing) and the ability to explain procurement concepts to different audiences in an engaging manner.
  • Skilled approach to execution of the negotiation process including usage of information, best-of-breed practice, and deal closure. Properly converts the negotiated deals to performance based, legally sound contracts that serve as a guide for on-going supplier management and program sustainability.
  • Communicates with Management and stakeholder groups affected by the teams sourcing decisions. The use of effective oral and written communication skills to achieve organization objectives and improve productivity is critical. Fosters the exchange of ideas and information as well as establishing productive working relationships and teams.
  • Initiates and cultivates open, honest, and beneficial relationships with colleagues and stakeholders by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of other’s needs, promotes common goals and follows through on commitments. Adapts information to stakeholder’s needs delivers communications tailored to the needs of the receiver; uses appropriate language and level of detail for the receiver; provides specific feedback to others; writes clear executive summaries and persuasive proposals.
  • Takes initiative to resolve conflicts constructively; diverts tensions away from individuals and toward work issues; probes for root causes of problems, collaborates to find mutually beneficial solutions, proposes action steps, and assists in implementation. Maximizes cultural sensitivity to influence positive long-term change with sustainable benefits for the company.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Flagship policies and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable in procurement specific systems and processes for the efficient management of sourcing events and contract negotiations (e.g., NetSuite, Market Place, eSourcing) with familiarity and awareness of relevant legal risks and issues.
