Position Summary:
We are seeking a Head of Biology to join the team to develop and advance our programs from early development to proof-of-concept and beyond. The successful candidate will be a confident leader, with attention to detail and significant prior success in preclinical stage program and scientific leadership/management for therapeutic programs in the biotechnology industry. This is an exciting and interdisciplinary role for a highly qualified and motivated individual. We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative scientist with a passion for bringing novel medicines to patients. S(he) will be comfortable working in and contributing to a very dynamic and cross-functional team environment. The applicant will be part of a fast-paced drug discovery team.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with biology team to develop, oversee and direct the therapeutic indication strategy in selected disease areas
  • Manage the scientific and operational aspects of the program(s), including implementation, development of program timelines, and monitoring of key milestones and decision points
  • Build, lead and manage a high-performing group of talented scientists
  • Perform research and development in collaboration with other functions in projects pertaining to a range of potential indications within the CNS indication space
  • Develop intellectual property, publishing scientific papers and other tasks related to company’s business and scientific interests
  • Communicate, as appropriate, efforts and progress to internal and external parties
  • Lead and manage external contract organizations, academic and industry collaborations
  • Lead, train and mentor research associates and develop scientific talent
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Genetics or a related field with 7-10 years of experience in life science industry, with 3+ years of demonstrated leadership on multidisciplinary preclinical teams
  • Good understanding of preclinical and early clinical development of psychiatric medications
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior start-up company experience
  • Experience with stem cell-based disease modeling and NGS techniques is strongly desirable
  • Experience with a wide range of functional cell-based assays including but not limited to RNAseq, single cell RNAseq, proteomics, high content imaging, electrophysiological analyses and mechanism of action studies
  • Expertise in primary and transformed cell culture and manipulation
  • Extensive experience in cultured neuron and glial function and characterization
  • Experience in the design and implementation of strategies from target identification and validation to lead identification, lead optimization and pre-IND
  • Expertise in drug development including cell-based assay development and optimization for screening molecules, preclinical animal models, and exposure to multiple CNS related therapeutic areas
  • Working knowledge of genome editing and gene modulation techniques including CRISPR-Cas9, RNAi, and/or use of AAV- and lentiviral vectors
  • Working knowledge of machine learning based approaches to analyze clinical, genomic, and high content phenotyping data
  • Demonstrated ability in working with highly skilled teams in a fast paced, entrepreneurial and technical setting
  • Experience in people and team leadership and initiating and leading industry and academic collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability in efficient budget management and milestone delivery and effective management of research activities and resources
