Calling all Design System specialists and practitioners. This role is a wonderful opportunity to join the Origami team to develop the Financial Times design system. The Financial Times design system has been supporting our flagship products - FT.com,  apps and our internal products for almost a decade. The team and the system are a loved and valued part of our product and tech community.

 

We're looking for a Design Systems specialist to contribute to our next big goal. Our new goal is to extend the reusability of the design system (Think Multi-brand system), so we're expanding the team to become cross-functional and 'make good things happen' at the FT. This will involve using your entire range of interaction, prototyping and visual skills to create a wonderfully consistent look and feel across our product portfolio. As well as design skills, strong collaboration with engineers and stakeholders is required to provide high-quality solutions.

 

What this role is about - key themes:

Help deliver our big goal: The Origami team's next big goal is to modernise the design system to become a theme able multi-brand design system that serves many of our brands and products within the Financial Times. This is a new role for the team, and they’re looking forward to having a designer contribute to this goal to deliver business value and user satisfaction outcomes.

Building the thing right! Create a unified, cohesive set of design system elements and configurable components for the design system which follow accessibility standards. Implementation of design tokens to drive our systems flexibility and scalability.

Maintain and set standards: Contribute to setting and maintaining standards for the design system. This includes maintaining accessibility standards, UI libraries, documentation and usage guidelines. Also setting standards for interaction and component design. Ensure cross-functional teams align to these standards and promote adoption across Product and Tech.

Discovery, analysis and testing: Exploration of divergent concepts whilst understanding how to converge and build towards the design systems vision. Test and implement modern interactions and patterns to deliver a premium experience for our subscribers and end users. 

Relationships and Advocacy: Build partnerships with key product teams and stakeholders. Be an advocate of bringing new ideas to the entire team and internal partners. Communicate processes and governance of the design system.

 

Requirements:

You like to help people, collaborate and share ideas

Experience  working in Product Design and UX

Experience working on design systems

A portfolio demonstrating UX and Design systems experience

Proficient with current design and prototyping tools (Figma, etc)

Highly curious and inquisitive about end users and the needs of cross-functional product teams 

Able to engage with stakeholders around your work

Interaction design  and brand craft

Ability to work with a low-ego, highly collaborative, cross-functional team

 

Nice-to-haves (non-essential):

Experience designing on platforms (Web, iOS, Android, etc)

Multi-brand design system experience 

Accessibility – experience building and testing on the web with assistive technologies

Progression at FT

We have a transparent, measurable progression framework, which will outline all of the skills FT Product Designers need, and detail on how to progress in each skill category. We will use this as a basis for your quarterly reviews, where you’ll self assess against the progression framework, track progression, and agree areas of focus with your line manager.

How we work

We offer a strict 35 hour working week to all staff in our London office. Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 2 days a week on average. We operate flexibly and thus this 2 day a week figure should be taken as a general ratio of the time you will spend in the office. Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London.
