Farm Sanctuary’s Watkins Glen sanctuary is home to approximately 800 farm animals rescued from abuse and neglect, including many from large and small animal agricultural operations.  At Farm Sanctuary they are given refuge, rehabilitation, and a lifetime of personalized care. The Watkins Glen Sanctuary team includes two Animal Care Managers who report to the Director of Shelter Operations and serve on the Watkins Glen Shelter Management team—a multidisciplinary team focused on excellence in all aspects of animal care.  The Animal Care Managers handle oversight and provide leadership to the team tasked with collaborating to provide the high quality care required by the multiple species in residence at our sanctuary.  

Responsibilities

  • In consult with internal and external resources, ensuring utilization of all appropriate resources and knowledge, the Animal Care Managers will work together to assess and ensure appropriate decisions are made regarding animal care for the sanctuary residents.  
  • Provide leadership, structure and support to ensure excellent communication within the animal care team as well as with shelter operations and facilities teams.
  • Training staff on all assigned responsibilities, ensuring team members have the support needed to be successful and effective in meeting Farm Sanctuary’s animal care standards
    • Initial training on new responsibilities
    • Regular shadowing and review of performance
    • Scheduling ongoing learning opportunities
  • Supervision of assigned animal care team staff, including the following
    • Approval of timesheets and time off requests 
    • Assessing performance, conduct, safety practices and compliance with policies and procedures 
    • Documenting and conducting performance evaluations. 
    • Recommending disciplinary actions when appropriate and handling once approved, in consultation with, as necessary, the Director of Shelter Operations and the Human Resources department
    • Resolving complaints or conflicts among staff, in consultation with, as necessary, the Director of Shelter Operations and the Human Resources department
  • Work any shifts when needed to determine if there are any overall issues with the shifts that need to be resolved.
  • Management of assigned project areas which may include, but are not limited to, feeds ordering and inventory, meds ordering and inventory, veterinary and animal care services appointments, staff scheduling, diagnostics, animal charting, and expense tracking.  This includes both direct work on the tasks as well as delegation to direct reports.
  • In collaboration with Shelter Operations staff, support work documenting, reviewing, updating, and implementing animal care protocols and policies
  • In collaboration with full Shelter Management Team, ensure adherence to Farm Sanctuary animal care protocols and policies
  • Assist Director of Shelter Operations in preparation of annual budget requests by evaluating the budget and the department’s needs and by making recommendations regarding requested budget additions 
  • Serve as organizational representative as assigned, including but not limited to special tours, media interviews, video live feeds, and event presentations
  • Act as primary or backup for the restocking and recording of veterinary supplies.
  • Serve as the backup for projects primarily assigned to the other animal care manager
  • Work a minimum of two caregiver shifts per week.

Qualifications

  • At a minimum, successfully meet all requirements of Farm Sanctuary’s Full Caregiver level, with proven success and ability to work without direction
  • Comfort with and ability to develop expertise working with all species in Farm Sanctuary’s care, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team-oriented and committed to promoting animal welfare
  • Commitment to providing the highest quality of care to Farm Sanctuary’s residents in accordance with animal care policies and veterinary best practices
  • Commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s organizational programs and goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while effectively managing multiple projects with creativity and flexibility
  • Confidence and ability to work independently, while maintaining consistent and relevant communication with supervisor, Shelter Management team, and others
  • Resourcefulness, poise and fluent adaptability to unexpected situations and developments
  • Collaborative and motivated to work well as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team, keeping others informed, managing expectations across the team, and highlighting opportunities and risks associated with projects.
  • Knowledge of animal protection movement, factory farming, and vegan issues preferred
  • Able to work in all weather conditions
  • Able to regularly perform heavy lifting
  • Previous experience supervising staff strongly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required

Job Specifications

  • Full time, non exempt position
  • Work schedule is 5 eight hour shifts per week; candidates must have flexibility to work any day of the week; regular weekend and holiday availability is required
  • Some regular evening hours required during summer months
  • Occasional travel may be required to assist with transport for animal adoptions or rescues
  • On call availability for animal emergencies, managers will be assigned a Farm Sanctuary cell phone
